Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Help with Mk5 Golf internal spare parts

Hi all, I'm preparing to sell my Mk5 Golf 2.0 TDI, but would like to improve the internal look of it as it has suffered some minor cosmetic damage over the years.

There's a little compartment on the driver's side which you pull the handle and it opens down - it's to the left of the bonnet release lever. I have somehow managed to snap the plastic handle that opens this.

Does anyone have an idea of what this exactly is called and how I might go about finding & fitting a replacement?

    Thanks

If you pull it out completely, there should be a VW Part code stamped on it. You can then do a search against that code and get some results. The Euro-specific wreckers would be able to help. That’s how I sourced replacement cup holder clips and a wing mirror for my MK 7.

Cool I will try that, thanks.

Also, does anyone know how to replace the centre console beverage holder in a Golf V? I managed to source a replacement part for mine, which has a snapped bottle-opener support, but replacing it seems to be a major exercise....

Is that the piece behind the console? When I got my Jetta, mine was in pieces in the seat back pocket. I managed to piece it all together and put it back in. Later I found that the back of the console can come off (can't remember how off the top of my head), but it would have been easier like that. Just look for some screws in the area, and pull gently.

The VW Part No. is 1K2857919D.

To remove the compartment, open it (use a set of pliers to grab whatever is left of the handle to open it) and when the compartment is in the open position pull it slightly down and towards you in line with the opening in the hinges (the hinges on the compartment are two c-shape plastic pieces that snap onto the hinge pins in the interior of the console).

Our Golf Mk5 had exactly the same problem and I got a replacement from Camden GTI's wrecking/spare parts yard when I was up in Sydney last year. I think the spring is too strong and the plastic too thin in handle and it weakens with use and age before it fails. I believe the replacement one I got is off a later model Mk5 as the spring is much weaker, so hopefully the handle will last longer.

Thanks, that's the compartment, but the part that I have broken is the handle only - so if I can replace just the handle, instead of the whole compartment, that would be the optimal solution. Looks like there are a few of the whole compartment available to buy on EBay.

              No, it's this:
Genuine Bottle Opener Cup Holder Divider for VW Golf MK5 MK6 GTI R32 CC Passat | eBay

              - well, not the actual bottle opener but the compartment that it sits in. If you can imagine, someone leant on the bottle opener, snapping the plastic supports, so the only way to get it back to original condition seems to be to replace the whole divider/cup holder. I've got the part, but have no clue how to replace it - my mechanic was not keen on doing it, a lot of time needed apparently.

I have kept my old one with the hope of being able to source a replacement handle, but I only ever found the complete compartment when I was looking. When I get some time I will disassembly my compartment to see if I can find a part number on just the handle. If you do find a handle flick me the details on where because I would be interested in getting one too.

I never had that divider in my 'roll top desk' between the seats.
