  • CV Joint boot cover

Changed the oil today and noticed the drivers side (i think it's driver's side, I was upside down ) CV boot cover has split.

Not a large split fortunately, but I'll get both side's boots changed.

I'll get a mobile mechanic to change it with me supplying the parts.

I think it's the outside boot that split, can someone please confirm.

Someone mentioned you need to disconnect the shalf from the transmission and then top up transmission fluid? Doesn't sound right to me.

      What gearbox does it have?

Use genuine VW or OEM GKN boots on it. Do the inner and outer boots, as quite often you can't get the outer CV off the shaft on these, to replace just the outer boot.

        Sorry, DSG GTI.

So you recommend to replace both inner and outer boots.

How much transmission fluid would I need?

What's a fair price for the whole job (replace all inner and outer boots)?

No transmission fluid needed. They unbolt from a flange.

Can't comment on price. Everyone values their work differently.

Thanks very much, I wish we lived closer

You'd do well in politics with an answer like that [emoji14] lol Ok, let me rephrase, how much should the parts cost and how long should it take?

Also do you recommend to replace bother inner and outer boot at the same time?

I experienced the outer CV not wanting to come off the shaft when I did mine. Had to remove the inner joint & slide the outer boot over the length of the shaft. My inner boot was in good nick [hadn't bought a new boot] so just cleaned & regreasing joint.
My experience has been, the outer boot goes first, & the inner lasts a long time because the angular movement is a lot less.
I used GKN brand from Imparts.

As has already been said, no transmission oil is needed. To my knowledge, all VWs are the same in the way they connect to the drive flange.

                  Unless it's a 2L FSI auto.

Just shows you I have never owned an auto & have no plans to buy one unless my legs don't work any more. I have now had both knees replaced & am good for another 20 years unless they take my licence away.

                        Imparts, HSY or Tooleys.

Or VW. At retail, the prices are pretty similar, and are all the same GKN kit.

Having not done this job (even though mine need it) this could be a noob question but why is necessary to remove anything? Are these not a split boot?

No they aren't split. I've never seen a split boot that works well.

CV joint/boot repair jobs also will need a wheel alignment after you finished as you take the hubs off to remove the drive shaft for repair. Normally if you are paying someone to do the work you might as well replace the CV joints as well because on older cars these would have the Km's used and could go not long after having the boot fixed and then you are paying for labour twice. CV joints are sealed from the maker.
