Its really simple guys, you can get away with either. Sticking with the service schedule or not, the car is not going to blow up.
So it just leaves the question, would you rather save money and get away with it, or spend money & know that your car is running as best as it can - which isnt always noticeable 'on the fly' ....
Maybe down the track at 80,000 kms you will notice how your not having issues like other people have because youve changed the oil every 5,000kms as opposed to every 15,000 kms.
So the benefits are long term, and not to mention there are some immediate benefits.
With the DSG oil, my thinking is if you change it at 5,000kms, you probably wont have to worry about the 60k change as all the crap is already gone from the harshest period to a gear box - the run in.
ME PERSONALLY, If I wanted to stick to schedules and save money I would of bought a corolla. Ive bought this car for performance, and the way I drive I think it needs all the TLC it can get.
Nothing you do to the car that VW do themselves will ever void warranty.
If you follow the manual that VW has printed for the correct procedure for any service -
1. 99.99% of the time nothing will go wrong,
2. VW will be able to tell if you have or not, if they gather you have done everything that was supposed to be done, that THEY would of done, then if there was an issue they would have to honour the warranty, as the only conclusion anyone could come to is there must be an issue with that part, and not the procedure of service that was carried out- as it was what VW prescribed.Last edited by Guest; 12-08-2008, 06:28 PM.

Because, if the statement in bold is anything to go by, the answer is no. If you were to service ANY part of your vehicle using non genuine parts during a Warranty Period(you are clear here) by a person who is not qualified as a Mechanic(Not withstanding TA's or Trade Apprentices under supervision by a qualified mechanic), then if/when you have a problem associated with that part, the warranty is instantly voided. No if's, buts or quite possiblies, go straight to the VW mechanic with the remains of your DSG gearbox(now with added shavings) and deposit the best part of $7k.
By the way, I was pissing myself laughing as I read this thread up to now(so was my housemate...).
Good luck mate..."If can't get behind your troops, feel free to stand in front of them..."

Just a little bit off track but still slightly with the topic of service intervals. The ZF Trans in Porsche,Audi and Passat which is a 5HP is said to be a filled for life. So wrong have you driven one of these with the same oil over 90ks , flaring banging and all sorts CHANGE the oil. Same with the Multitronic (Faultytronic) standing joke in the circle) is the same it gets skipped and it kills the box. Done heaps. i dont see the DSG being any different. Same goes for Manual transmissions , how much better does the shift feel when you have changed the oil, especially if you use a good oil im sure you will agree. G12 coolant fill for life, Well i chuckle at that one. The boast of the coolant being a fill for life but you do a couple of water pumps and stats in the life of the engine!!!!!! Coolant gets a change anyway!!!!!!!
Anyway thats my 5c worth, ill stick to recommending changing all of the above
Sorry im of the DSG topic a bit but is relevant i feel

Everyone makes valid points.... Personally I would leave it up to a mech. to do mine. You're risking $500 on a 7k (or 15k) part...... Fair enough if you would be saving 2k+ but $500 is a fairly low saving.
This thread is fairly funny, its like cat and dog..... both keep repeating themselves but no one seems to want to give in!sigpic

Your completely wrong about needing a qualified mechanic to change oil. Im not going to both much more about your post.

2) Unless I'm mistaken, one does not replace oils solely on the basis of their perceived contamination with metal filings. By virtue of the fact that the oil is lubricating working surfaces in varying temperatures and loads, over time the oil will break down, don't you think there is a chance that the oil may need replacing at 60K anyway?
3) So the logical conclusion is that all VW drivers who stick to the schedule should have bought a Corolla? I'll remember that at trade in time
1) Its a car mate. It runs on what you put in it. Different qualities of oils and petrols will make the car perform differently -smoother faster whatever. You look after the car more often, you will notice it always driving beautifully.
2) The schedule change is only reccomended at 60k, not required. This is why many VW's have never changed them. People would just rather stick thier $700 in thier own pocket. So If its not even required at 60k, a 5k change to get the run in crap outta the box would do it a world of good. Still, having bought the tools to do it myself the first time, I may do it again around 40k just for the hell of it.
3) READ THE $#%$#% POST, I SAID ME PERSONALLY, THATS WHY I WROTE IT IN CAPITAL SO PEOPLE LIKE YOU WOULD NOTICE IT !!!

Dont you think if what you were doing would VOID your warranty they would have the responsibility to tell you? If such a rediculous law exisited dont you think it would be gospel among mechanics at dealerships to inform you of it whenever they hear you were going to touch the engine yourself?)...And what law?? They don't have to inform you, it ain't a law, its just common knowledge. Modify/tamper with a car in any way while under warranty, and if that part goes bang, or contributes to something else going bang, you pay for it out of your own pocket.

PS. I have no interest in servicing the DSG myself but this thread is heading downhill fast unless you recognise that whatever you post here, there are always others who will argue against your point of view.Granite Passat sedan TDI (125kw), DSG, beige leather
Candy White Polo 6R, 66TDI, DSG, no options
