Wow! I love the look of the GruppeM unit but $900

Hmmm, AVC-9000 or the GruppeM intake?

Can't recommend Steve the owner of Modshack highly enough. He obviously loves making up projects, and was happy to e-mail back and forth several times, with a LOT of info and detail. I'm VERY happy with the response upgrade to the TDI, and the induction noise now sounds like a sports car! The housing is very insulated, but I got the extra insulation added as well.

The hardest part is picking a colour, but the good news is I got sent red, white and silver stickers as I asked for only a housing with a hole in the back, and a blank front and to complete the support arm mounting myself. His off the shelf items complete with K&N are a great option, where else do you get a housing made entirely of Phenolic, one of the best insulators known to man. I've tried to buy phenolic before in the past, and it's hard to find!

Another tough choice is the longer, thinner Mickoz style, or the shorter fatter one I got. Both have some clearance issues, and forget putting your engine cover back on with the bigger one like mine unless you mount it lower and cut the cover a bit.

Overall the best bolt on mod I've yet done, now about 8k's in.

This is the nicest cold air intake I have ever seen, I might have to postpone getting the cold air intake and keep saving

Yep, very nice, but certainly not that impossible to do yourself.
Quite a premium over Modshack and similar insulated pods.
                Does look dead sexy though!
I recently watched a Carbion GTI intake go for under $200 Au on e-bay USA, and if I didn't already have something would have gone for it.
With the strength of our dollar in the USA, I'd set up a few alerts on e-bay US and sit back and wait.

You mean a GTI intake would fit your TDI?
So could a GTI intake be made to fit a TSI?
How similar are they? Anyone know?

cooler air going into the engine for combustion means its more dense which means theres more oxygen which means you can produce more power. the air goes into the intake and then into the turbo and then through the intercooler to cool the air further before it finally goes into the intake manifold and into the cylinders.

remember all it is is two pipes connecting to each other.

the 2 are nowhere near the same the inlet manifold on the TSi is at the rear of the block and on the GTI on the side by the battery

To my understanding, the TDI and TSI have identical AIRBOX position, with slightly different ducting to it. So in my mind the "box" would be quite interchangable, but I'll need to have a look at someones TSI to be sure. I would have no problem fitting an aftermarket GTI inlet to my TDI, with some modifications post filter. I figure even the stock GTI would be feasable. They all seem to attach to the same "feed" point in stock form.

It's the plumbing after the airbox itself that differs. The TDI feeds rapidly into the turbo just around the block on the passenger side, and is rather short, whereas the GTI continues around the corner and along the rear of the block much further over the drivers side. Obviously different Turbo placement, most likely due to the whopping DPF on the Diesel pushing the Turbo passenger side. The TSI is like the TDI, where the Supercharger drop intake / Turbo intake sits just around the "corner", I'd fab a GTI intake by cutting it to length and using a readily available silicon adaptor.

I'll edit up some pics to show what I mean. Ultimately, I believe it's the addition of a straight through POD that allows removal of the restrictive MAF grid that makes much of the response improvement. The Pod, especially my large Modshack one, gives a lot of induction noise, which I like. so bear that in mind if you're a sook.
