Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • fuel consumption after chipping.

just wondering for those who have chipped their cars whether you have noticed any change in your fuel consumption?

I have recently chipped (APR) our Jetta 2.0TSI and have noticed a gain in performance, mainly from a standstill (hesitation is almost gone) and in the midrange acceleration. Not having floored the thing to redline i am yet to experience the top end performance (bear in mind its a family car with usually a bub on board lol).
Before chipping the mfd used to total about 650-700k's to empty if i added my distance already travelled with the distance to empty value.
After chipping it now adds to over 700k's all the time and on the weekend even got as high as 760.

Just wondering what others have experienced.

I have found the difference to be negligible during normal city / highway driving. I'm sure it would go through the roof around a track, the extra herbs don't come for free.

As you did more kms did your fuel efficiency improve, (even without your chip) since you drove it away from the dealer.

I am chipping v. soon (APR also), but have noticed my fuel is getting better the more kms i am putting on it since new. To start with it was aweful and havent come close to 700kms a tank yet.

Much more accurate fuel economy figures are calculated by filling your tank, recording the distance to the next fill and using how much you actually put in. The MFD figures are often quite optimistic.

Chipping usually does help with economy ... more efficiently tuned engine. Of course ... there is the other side of the coin ... ... some folk find a chipped car has an irresistible accelerator (which then negates the previously achieved economy).

thats an optimistic way of putting the optimism of the mfd!

didn't find the fuel consumption improved that much since new... maybe by about 1L/100k's.. but that's about it.. since new we have done nearly 10000k's at an average of about 8L/100k's.

Have found the MFD to be not too far out on my actual consumption. haven't let the fuel get to the warning yet so dont know whether it would stretch to the 700k mark or not.
if i compare the trip meter with the fuel gauge i get approx 300-350 out of the first half of the tank.

mmm, thanks. Im averaging 10L/100km after 3500km.

Cant even get close to the 8L/100km mark and i dont get into it all that much (sometimes though ) . Was hoping to atleast crack single digits.

I'm the same, must be brisbane's traffic... i have noticed only about an extra 50km's in urban travels.....if i get 450km a tank i'm happy

Was going to start a new thread on this, but this looks like a good place to come in.

I had been thinkling about this, since a few people have posted that they might get a slight improvement in fuel economy with a chipped car.

Now I haven’t noticed any improvement with the Chipped UK/ST3 “Economy” map (still waiting for the fix to the flash counter issue before I flash again ) but Sydeny traffic is sooo inconsistent I can get variations from 10L through to 12L/100km on the same route to work.

Anyway I’ve been trying to work out if there may be something in the improvements others have claimed, and came up with something that may explain it.

We all know that most cars make their peak torque well below peak power, and that torque normally drops off substantially as revs rise.

Logic tells me that the point at which the engine makes peak torque is probably it’s most fuel efficient. The AFR generally doesn’t change much over the rev range, so we are getting more torque for the same amount of fuel and air.

This is possibly due to less time for complete combustion as revs rise, as we have less time to get fuel/air in, detonate and then out of the combustion chamber at higher revs. As revs rise torque is falling away as efficiency drops.

Power continues to climb, as power is a function of torque and the number of engine cycles - i.e how many times the torque is applied to the crankshaft.

So if we get a new tune that increases the mid range torque, and therefore we use WOT less, then we spend more time where the engine operates at it’s greatest efficiency, and therefore we use less fuel.

Mechanical engineers or automotive engineers feel free to shoot my theory down with science if I’m on the wrong track.

And anyone who doesn't yet have a chipped car - feel free to use this to convince the other half that you'll save money in the long run.

I think this sums it up best. Just because its more fuel efficient after chipping due to a better tune, If ur foot is heavy its all for ****.
