Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • How To Open Boot with key? (Yes I know its a dumb question)

I've got a GTI. How do you open the boot with the key? It has a little logo on the button of the boot flap on the key but does nothing when I press it. The only way I can open the boot is hit the unlock button twice in quick succession (unlocking the whole car) then lift the boot lid as normal.

So whats the button on the key for?

Ive never actually been able to figure this out but do the doors have to be unlocked to open the boot? It seems to be the case for my car.

Is it actually possible to open the boot without unlocking the car doors?

Press and hold down for one second the middle button. The rear hatch then unlocks so you can open it up.

Or you could open the hatch automatically.

The dealer should have explained that when you picked the car up. As per above, hold it down and it shall unlock.

If you hold down the lock button, the windows will also wind up (and vice versa if you hold down the unlock button).

When you have the boot 'unlocked'...put your key in your pocket immediately.

Reason? If you happen to put the key on the floor of the boot (while it is open), when you close the boot, the locking mechanism will activate immediately, and your keys will be nice and safe inside the car.

This is THE only way you can lock your keys in the car. Take care.

Press the unlock button on the door a few times and the rear hatch can be opened. The remote button doesn't work when it's in the ignition.

oooh i dunno. i've locked my keys under my bonnet before....THAT WAS FUN!
i was searching everywhere for about 15mins and then remembered that i was checking the oil. i had the keys in my hand but needed a spare hand to put the support arm up.....so cleverly, i put the keys on the engine cover, put the support arm up, did the oil check, put the bonnet back down, and walked off . i went inside to grab something and then came back doing the old "front'n'back pocket tap", closely followed by a and then the realisation came........then all i could do is

lucky i had a spare set inside to get them out

No, you can't while the engine is on ... at least, I've never been able to.

The only time I find it annoying is when you're dropping someone off and they have gear in the boot. You actually need to turn the car off, take the keys out, and open the boot.

Press the unlock button on the drivers door a few times and you can open it up that way.

Two presses of the driver's side unlock button will unlock all doors + boot.
This is not the same as pulling on the door handle twice, that only unlocks the driver's door and nothing else.

Single press just unlocks the driver's side door.

When I picked my car up the dealer explained that the golfs were the only VW car not to have remote boot open ( as in boot opens itself when you press the button, not just unlock ).

Depends if you've done the mod I mentioned earlier or not.
