Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Clutch pedal snapped/stuck to floor

Was leaving work for the day on Thurs and when depressing the clutch, it went back with a snap/crunch and was stuck to the floor.
I couldn't see the damage apart from a plastic clip that fell to the floor in two pieces.
Got it towed to my usual place, and they looked at it on the Friday and said that there were around 9 pieces that needed replacing including the master cylinder, and that it'd cost $650 but i'd need to wait till Monday for the parts.
Just got called up Moday and they discovered the pedal itself had snapped so they'd need to wait another day for another $90 part to come in. I said that sounded more like what i'd read, that it was normally a cheap fix, but they reckoned that the master cylinder failed which sized up and caused the clutch pedal to snap.
Does $740 seem a bit excessive for this fix?

Pedal failed on my S3. I had it apart before the towie arrived. Using just a leatherman. A dude in the next street welded it for me. All back together under an hour from breaking it. On a Sunday.
If they aren't a vw specialist I could see it running up a lot.

I only needed mine welded, no extra parts. I did have it towed however.
