Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • How to disable side mirrors' synchronization on VW Golf MK4?

Anyone knows how to turn off the synchronized function of both wing mirrors? That is, when we put the joystick on R to adjust the right mirror, it could move the left mirror the same time. However, if we turn joystick on L, it only works for the left. What a silly design!

    Thanks for for your advice!

Why not just set the right then set the left?

It's an intentional design to allow you to drop both mirrors quickly if you're performing a tight parking manoeuver.

I don't think they all do it.

I think it's only on cars with electric seats.

Comes as part of the driver assistance package on Passats so probably similar in other models and only the left mirror drops when reversing and not far enough to be much help anyway

I don't think the MK4 Golfs did the mirror dip when reverse is engaged.

I just bought one of these golfs today for as our "don't give a sh*t" car. I thought there was an electrical fault.

Umai Naa!! - Ours does't have electric seats but the mirrors are synchronised, very, very strange feature. Adjust right, then left.

I think now that he understands how and why, it'll be ok.

Maybe he'll learn to love it?

Thanks for all your replies again. I've already got used to first adjust the right mirror then the left. However, it doesn't make sense to me when I actually just need to position right one. Really Weird design it is.

Not a silly design, it's a feature - Synchronised mirror adjustment (Page 56 of your Controls and Equipment manual) ... Both mirrors can easily be adjusted for different drivers just by adjusting the left mirror. As mentioned above, adjust Right first, then Left - then when someone else drives the car, adjusting Right automatically adjusts the Left.

My car does this although it didn't for several months when I first bought it. Personally I don't like it and want to switch it off - did you ever get an answer how to do it?
Rather than people calling it a 'feature' I think it should be called an 'option'. Don't know how it started behaving this way but it just started doing it one day. I must have hit on one of VW's mysterious combinations of control movements to change it - like resyncing a key fob or clearing the service indicator.
