  • Shifter /Gearbox help. Time for an expert?

    Hi folks,
    I recently had a problem where if I put my Mk4 GTI in reverse it was actually in 1st gear. I was advised to adjust the shift linkages. In doing so I broke one of the shift end cable catch ->this part https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...nd/1j0711761b/ <-

    I replaced the part and performed the shift linkage adjustment by following a youtube guide but I've just made it worse now.

    Now reverse still = 1st
    1st = 3rd
    2nd = 4th I think
    3rd 4th and 5th I think are correct.

    I can get the car in reverse by pushing down on the golf club head looking thing that the shift linkage cables are connected to while another person moves the shifter into the reverse position.

    Is it time for me to throw in the towel and accept defeat before I do any more harm?? Or is there something (anything) I can try before paying for a mechanic?

    Thanks in advance

    So its fixed but I thought I'd post here just in case anyone else with no car knowledge has the same problem and makes the same very simple mistake.

    When adjusting the linkage you have to remove the slack from the cable so I was pushing the cable into the end catch as that seemed like the correct way. What I should have been doing was to pull the cables away from the shift end cable catch's.

    That difference of 3-4mm on each cable made the difference of the mess I described above to it now working in all gears. I'm pretty happy as I was going to call a mobile mechanic later today.

      Hey Clif, you have my number, don't be frightened to use it. Well done for keeping at it though and working it out.

      Have a great Christmas

        Thanks Gav. When something like this happens I always assume that its got to be something major like a failed clutch or gearbox. The fact that a little $50 plastic piece could cause all that trouble is kind of funny.

        I'm just happy its fixed for the new year now.

        I hope you and your family have a great christmas too mate
