  • Small fan wont work

    Hi All,

Only 3 weeks ago my fans were working perfectly, I added the resistors and they came on bang on cue.

I blew up my A/C compressor, fitted a new one, replaced the drier, added gas. A/C works perfectly but now my small fan wont work.

I checked the voltage in the plug, it was fine. It's definitely being switched on, its just not spinning.

I really don't want to take my fans off again, I just want to drive the car. So, the impatient part of me wants to drive it with a single (large) fan. What do you think?

Or, if that's a terrible idea, I guess I'll need to take the god damn fans off again.

    Any suggestions/advice/criticism is welcome.

    Thanks,

    Christian

I just unplugged my fans, A/C on, engine running. 12v going to each of them (low speed). No movement on the small one.

I think I should be patient and try to fix or replace.

Ok, so, I fixed my small fan.

It was a little coincidental that it stopped working while I was working on that part of the car. In the end it was purely coincidental.

I used this guide to reveal the innards of my fan; http://pics.tdiclub.com/data/517/Fan_Repair.pdf

My fan internals were different. I had 4 bushes in mine and one of them was jammed in its carrier. So, I threw a bit of WD40 at all the bushes and made sure they all moved freely. Put it back together and voila.

You can see the bush in the top left that hasn't come out. It was pretty happy in there.

Nice ! I did the same with mine many years ago, but it did fail again about 12 months later. I then replaced it for a little under $100.

          Thanks!

Yeah, I'll replace it when it goes again. The good news is that getting the fans out is much easier than expected.

Yes it is easy. 3 screws and an electrical connector.

I need to take the shroud off for mine, the bolts are behind it. But still easy.
