  • Ipod Connection

Hey guys, i just bought (on monday) a 2001 Golf GTi and am very impressed with it, its in great nick! It has the Eurovox model 4680 CD player in it, and i am wantng to get a connection that will allow me to plug in my 80g ipod classic. i have done some reading on these things and there are afew that can be plugged in behind the CD that lead into the glove box. Does anyone have any comments on these? or a recommendation on a brand? and if so, where did you get it, and how much did it cost?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks guys!!

    Evan.

Firstly welcome to the forums and congrats on the purchase. Post up some pics asap.
In regards to iPod compatability, I either want to get a Dension or a DICE ice unit. They're not a cheap setup though. Best place I can seem to find for information is a place in the UK.

I'm not sure about other mods but these seem to be the best adaptors for factory head units.
    Cheers,
    Trent

Cheers, thanks Treza. There both about $200 posted, so yes they are expensive, but they are a permanent hardwired solution to listening to the ipod whilst keeping the stereo stock

      Thanks!

I did the same in the wifes Subaru, the old Clarion worked perfectly, but the new Pioneer does MP3/WMA CD and has Direct iPod control. At under $300 it was money well spent.

If you want to spoil yourself a little, there are more and more DVD units with motorised screens that will fit a single DIN slot and do all the above for under $1,000

...mind you then you are getting close to full SAT NAV systems too... Think about it...

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Meh. I like how the factory head unit looks.
Not that I've been looking at all but I haven't seen an aftermarket unit that I think would look good in the .:R. For my tastes anyway.

Hi Guys. Interested to know if there has been any progress with this. I have a 2002 GTI with the eurovox headunit and i'm looking for a cheap but quality way to hook up the ipod. I've searched here, vortex, and the net in general for 2 days. I've read alot about connecting the ipod via the CD changer but can't find anywhere in Aus to buy the parts or have it done. Plus it has to be cheaper than $395 from a VW dealer or 97 pounds for the denison thingy. Surely theres somewhere to buy the plug?.....

Any update or help would be greatly appreciated.

Otherwise fk the ipod, i'll take it back cause it's useless if it can't go in the car and I dont want to pay over $100 to connect it when I can listen to mycds for free!

What I would really like is a USB connector. A mate has a Hyundai i30 that comes standard with with a USB port that he plugs his memory stick into. Anybody have any clues how to manage that?

You'd really have to replace the stock headunit - you not only need to be able to talk to the USB device at that point, but also read the file format that the music is stored in on the USB device.
                  Nothing to see here...

Yeah, I know.. it's all wishful thinking anyway. Left up to me I'd have heaps of stuff coming out of the dash.

Dension's higher end units have the USB link as well as iPod and a card reader as well from memory.
In regards to progress, I just ended up going with a FM tuner for the moment. Quality is good enough for me.
Link to thread I created about it is below.

I've since also added a pretty neat pass through GPS adapter which has a shiny blue LED around the lighter extender and a cable with adapters for lots of different sat navs. Picked it up from Jaycar Electronics pretty cheap as well. This means I can run iPod and GPS at the same time.
                      Cheers,

I believe there is also a DICE unit that will accept multiple forms of media (ie: sd cards, usb etc)

I ended up buying 2 DICE ice i-vw-r units at about $250 each one for my 01' GTI and one for my dads 06' FSI. so hopefully they will arrive next week and we can put them in, ill keep you guys updated on how that goes
