bolts and washers in australia

hi all

just wondering if there's any other (possibly less expensive) option to get one use bolts (sub-frame, water pump etc) and washers from other than going to VW/Audi themselves?
I find it hard to swallow buying a $5 washer to pay more than triple just for postage

Most of the single-use stuff you can actually re-use.

Bolts from VW aren't that expensive, considering they're specific to the job.

When I changed the timing belt on our previous 6N2 Polo, there were a number of bolts that were single use only stretch bolts. When I tried to buy them there were none in Aust., had to go on back order. I figured that I was one of the few people who worked by the book & that most mechanics just reused them. When they arrived I thought the price was very reasonable. I am currently restoring a Lanz Bulldog & any high tensile or fine metric bolts from the specialist fastener suppliers is quite expensive.

well it depends what the bolts doing.

There are a lot of single use TTY (torque to yield) bolts on VW cars. There are also a lot of bolts which are called single use but which are not torque to yield.

You can usually tell the TTY bolts by the torque spec, which will be "torque to Xnm, then another 180degrees, or something like that. But thats not foolproof way to tell by any means.

I buy bolts from the dealer pretty regularly. They are not actually expensive, especially if you can pick them up. It also helps to find a friendly dealer parts desk that will give you trade.

Yeah, don't buy oil from the dealer.

Unless it's Haldex coupling oil, because nobody else makes it.

Oh I sourced that from overseas too. I was thinking the price would also be ridiculous if bought from dealers. Do you remember how much it was for future reference? Haldex Oil and filter?

depending on the bolt - you could replace them with grade8 standard bolts from the fastener suppliers. Then you have to do a bit of thinking about what to torque them to. Possibly use a drop of loktite too.

Haldex oil was $55 at trade price, so around $60 retail.

Filter prices vary a bit, there's 3 different types. Usually around $100.

yeah i got both for $100 aus delivered so that's pretty good. then filter wrench $30
