  • Alternator loom advice

I am getting the standard MK4 fault of the alternator fuse getting very hot. It has not melted the box yet but is on its way there as can see some small signs of heat damage on the fuse box cover. I know the fix is to replace the alternator loom.

This appears to have 3 smaller connectors in it. Could someone tell me are these connected to the heavy guage alternator wire for power in any way or can I simply open the outer cover encasing them all and replace the larger cable and re-wrap the loom. (or even leave it in place and just run a new heavy guage cable)?

    Many thanks

Pretty sure the alternator fuse is a strip. Is that the one you mean? The green blade fuses melt the holders normally.

Thank you for the reply. Yes the strip fuse 110amp f177 is what is heating. Green fuses are good and fans work at low speed so dont think its the fan issue. I have read it is an issue with either a loose contact at the fuse point or the cable gets damaged internally from years of use and a build up in resistance cooks it. I have checked the contacts and they seem good. Going to take the battery out in a bit and check the earth points under it and clean them up if needed. I am quite happy to do the electrical work and can run a new cable but I just need to know if the rest of the loom is connect to the larger guage cable or if that is just an connection for the ecu and charging system in the loom shielding.

      Thanks
