Reflashing via the VAGCOM port is far less invasive than changing a chip, and also has other benefits such as checking for error codes at the same time as the reflash.
GOT YA !!! nice and clear. Exactly what I needed to know.. Thanks
BTW.. what happened to your mk3 dude..Always loved the BORA 4motion, you get the luxury of a mk4 and still running the VR6 and 4wd too!

I'll know tomorrow if my old car is written off. If that's the case, I'm hoping to get a 2003 Bora 4Motion - and if I get it, I'd certainly be in for this.

      I realise that's a lot of "if"s...

I got my Bora 4motion remapped over the weekend, and after a little time letting the car adapt to the new map, it really opened up the lungs of my car. Previously, it pulled fairly well from about 2.5k to 4k but then kind of faded towards the redline. Now it pulls nicely all the way to redline. Not a massive difference given it is NA, but mid-gear acceleration is greater and far more 'useable'. On the way back to Melbourne today I was tagging along behind an early WRX on overtaking. I had to hold back in 3rd and 4th behind him, then when I overtook him I was pulling away. I even managed to stick with a 350Z for a while, until he got a bit too silly with too-tight overtaking.

Gavin is a top bloke too - just make sure he takes you for a spin in his A3 I didn't have time to go for a ride, but I reckon it would be a real white-knuckle time
Thanks for adding your write up Nathan. I am glad it's adapting well. Did you use more juice going back home than on the way here?

To add to what Nathan said regards chipping/flashing. I have a cable which is pretty similar to a VAG-COM lead but has the ability to write as well as read information from the ECU. It depends on the particular ECU though, as not all can be written through the diagnostic/OBD port. Custom-Code provide me with the software for each application.

MK4 GTIs are one example. I can still flash them without actually breaking out the soldering iron like most tuners. I have adapter leads that allow me to flash them whilst hooked to a bench supply. obviously, this is less invasive than actually replacing the chip. I am aware that there are many, many cars running replacement soldered chips in the world but it is a potential for problems down the line.

        Cheers

Manaz, if you do get a 4-Mo I'd be happy to help you out. Whereabouts are you? I have sort of got plans to make some trips out East in the near future.

The Bora idea appears to have fallen through, my insurer are repairing my existing car ($5k+ to repair a car insured for $7.5k).

                    Sorry.

Sorry to let this thread fall by the wayside, I have been very busy with my day job. It does look like I might be transiting through Sydney again, in the near future.

It shouldn't be too hard to extend my time between flights at the airport, which may provide opportunity to do some flashing.

Please post up if you would be interested.

There were a few guys asking about chips for VR6s and the reply from Custom-Code wasn't what I expected. Unfortunately, this service is only offered at their headquarters. I am sorry to those that were hoping for an alternative in the market place.

With this flash software is it easy to accidently erase it and put it back to normal or once it is loaded, does it stay there until it is un-loaded as such.

                          Sorry silly question.

Not a daft Q mate, if you don't know how would you ever find out.

It would not be possible for the end user to accidently overwrite or erase the software once installed. Once flashed it will be there until the end of time

If it were overwritten by VW during a service, then I would re-instate the Custom-Code FOC.

Thanks dude, I find it very interesting. I know the XR5 guys have a similar thing that they can swap back to a factory map for services so their warranty doesn't get void.

Sounds like a really good idea. I love all these sneaky things that you can do these days.
