  • cluster swap?

Hey guys looking at doing a cluster swap and have been told I can swap mine with a set I recently bought. Question is what does vag-tacho do ib this process? Retrieve SKC and change mileage? Anyone had any first hand experience with this process?

Do you know what immo version you have? I just recent swapped mine over using a ebay vag tacho with no drama at all. Changed mileage and everything. Whilst your their if you feel comfortable with it i would do some of the little tacho tweaks such as illuminated needles, distance to empty, linear temp gauge and cruise control light. Its a simple process but you want to make sure you do it right and have all your keys with you. Let me know if you have any dramas

Would be interested to hear how you get on with this Anthony as I also have a set of Bora Sport clocks to put in.

Whys that weird? (its good that they are both immo3). What year is the car?

Also consider an alternative of just swapping the clock faces and needles over given they are of the same style. Might be considerably cheaper.

That sites decent but doesn't actually tell you how to do it.

Practically what you need to do is.
          1. Grab SKU from old cluster using Vagtacho
          2. Grab soft coding from instruments and can gateway, and mileage from old cluster from VCDS (
          3. Install new cluster
          4. Grab SKU from new cluster using vagtacho
          5. Change mileage using Vagtacho
          6. Follow this.
          7. Do key matching (make sure you have all keys available)

Let us know if you want the extra features, Ill happily look at the eeprom file for you.

Not to speak for Anthony, but if the cluster from the 1.6 is the same as a standard 2.0 cluster (what I'm looking to replace), then the new cluster he has is much more fully-featured - the fact that it looks way cooler is just a bonus

Im using a mk4 gti cluster, key and using an a3 ecu. Tried swapping over the faces but the layout underneath is different. The backs have different components so its hard. Also the needle stems are shorter on the sports clocks so they wont sit right.

Lachlan the 1.6 cluster is different again from the gti one too

I have key from gti but not for the bora, will this matter?

Oh ok, The tacho and speedo looked the same so i was assuming they might be the same. Whats the extra features?

Ah as above fair enough makes sense. No you use your old key but reprogram them to the new cluster. Not sure how you are going to go with the a3 ecu but it should be fine. Who installed that? or does it have immo defeat?

Shouldn't the cluster and the key be adapted to each other if they came out of the same car? (I'm asking for information purposes here as I really don't know how this works ...)

Ah, wait up - I think I misunderstood this - so you're now wanting to fit the Bora Sport clocks in place of the GTI ones?

When you say the backs have different components do you mean the plugs don't fit from the GTI to the new Bora Sport or is that all fine?

So my 1.6 has no mfa, the GTI does aswell as the bora sport as its not the full featured mfa. The faces looks better too. The difference when pull them both apart was the boras face splits into two and the 1.6 is one whole piece. Will have to buy vagtacho to do it all i guess. Yea so the A3 is litos old ecu with cc stage 3. Gav recently did an immo defeat due to my engine being early model and ecublate model. Ecu is from an agu so suits mine.

So I reporgram my key for the bora sport clocks

Plaugs are the same, the curcuit board isnt, different mouldings I guess.

Yes I want the bora sport clocks instead of the GTI ones as it looks so much better and suits my interior too

Beat me to it - I thought this might be the case but good to hear it confirmed re. just coding the key to the cluster.

re. the 1.6 cluster - I don't think the standard 1.6 has a half FIS even - a bit like the standard 2.0, so no fancy messages etc.

Didn't scrutinise the original pic closely enough to realise it was GTI clocks with Bora Sport clocks so almost identical in appearance and function.

That link from BackDoorShenanigans above has the key matching info in it too Anthony, but just for posterity I'll post it here so it's easy to find in future.

Yes, I agree - the Bora Sport clocks look sweet and will match any brushed aluminium trim you have going on.
