Yeah i agree with the Gen filters mate the cost is marginal. Oil pressure at idle minimum at 80c is 2bar. Revs should be around 2.7- 3.5/4.0 bar. Sound like you are ok. Just know how the strainers block up with crap , but sounds like you are good.Great to hear it was checked though, could have been a disaster. Lifters it is then hey.
      Cheers

VW tech checked the oil pressure and changed the filter.
Did a Vagcom check as well. No faults either.

VW Tech, highly recommended repairer for Melbourne Boys. He knows his Vw's.

What is the reasoning behind the 2L using a bit of oil? I was checking over my engine yesterday and found the oil needed topping up.

I have not heard of this 2.0L being known to use oil before. The wife's Vento has around 340,000k's on it now and I still don't put oil in it between oil changes which I have always done (with filter) at 15,000k's as per the service schedule. I have always used genuine filters and either Shell Helix Ultra or Mobil 1. (Both are fully synthetic).

The thing that no one seems to have mentioned here (and I'm no mechanic) is that in the first post it is mentioned that it has a new cam. Any chance it is causing the problem with the lifters?

It is acceptable to use 1ltr per 1000ks with your engine and VAG have that as a disclaimer in the handbook and they have stood by this for years, i started with them in 1988 and it was the case then. What 2.0 litre is it? reason i ask is that the Beetle 2.0 was shocking for drinking oil. Got to the stage i would check the oil if a car was in for a headlight fault or something, just made it a habit.
