  • Stronger Replacement Oil Pans? + To sensor or not to sensor?

So, not too surprisingly, I've managed to crack my second sump. Thankfully this time it's a slow leak, but it's a leak nonetheless. Needs to be replaced.

My car is around 100mm off the at the sump but with stiff coils I've still managed to scrape it in a few places and now she's busted. Again.

    ___

So I'm wondering - does anyone know of any replacement sumps that are stronger than factory? Can I get something done aftermarket?
I know there is a VW sump guard but it weights a tonne and would make oil changes a pain in the ass.

    ___

    Also - oil sensors.

My 2.8L AUE engine does actually have an oil sensor but I don't think it's actually working. The first time I broke my sump I lost all my oil in a few seconds however I had no warning light on the dash. I've also turned the key to ACC position when the car had no oil and the sensor wasn't connected and again there were no warning lights.

I find that non-oil sensor pans are cheaper and easier to find with more aftermarket parts available so I'm wondering if it's worth even bothering with the sensor or should I look into deleting it?
Does anyone know how this sensor works in terms of whether it sends a warning signal when it's open or closed?

I check and change my oil regularly and I very sure I'd not if my engine lost oil suddenly or gradually. The only way I can forsee it loosing oil is through a busted sump. If it's a big bust then I'll know and it's a small crack then I'll hopefully check it in time or notice the decrease in engine performance.
    ___

    So - your thoughts?

What about raising your engine with motor mount spacers?

        or run a sump guard

If you can get one made cheap, raising would be a cheaper option, also with a sump guard more work if you need to get underneath

            Thanks for the help guys.

I've got the V6 AUE engine.

I've never heard of raising the engine before Lol!
Do extended motor mounts exist and how it would it go with clearance on things like the transfer case/modules/exhaust? Do we know of anyone who has done it before?

The problem is that if you are cracking the sump because you are hitting it with objects and so you strengthen it, the load is now going to be transferred to other parts of the engine and could cause damage elsewhere. Even a sump guard will end up transferring the load into other body elements.

The only solution is to eliminate the impacts in the first place.

I've got the 2.8L V6? Is it still applicable?

                    Bumpski pls!

Would you install non-oil sensor oil pan and short circuit sensor ?

Also - anyone know anything about 2.8L V6 motor mount raising kits?

                    Cheers for the help xD

Your best choice would be fitting a steel under tray might be a pain to remove for oil change but this will not effect anything else. Raising your motor may effect geometry of drive components causing premature wear. I'd be sticking with the oil level sensor also. It doesn't take long for bearings to be damaged if you lose your oil by the time you realize it could be to late.

Thought I'd pitch in and show off what I got done after poking a hole in the sump a few weeks back.
Not the best solution I'm sure but it's good enough for the moment.
Cost me $100 to get the sump patched and the plate welded on.

                          Thanks for your input
Might just have to bite the bullet and get a steel tray. Just looks so heavy and cumbersome.
Any idea where to get one in Aus without costing the earth?

The only reason I asked about the oil sensor is because I don't believe mine is working. I've had the sump empty of oil many times and the car has never shown any warning lights.

                          That looks great!
                          Good idea!
I'm going to have to buy a new sump again (current one has a slight leak from a new crack) and I might get someone to weld a nice extra patch onto it for strength.

Where did you go to get this done?

It's just a place off Alfred Street in Warragul, but if you're not a country bumpkin like I am I'm sure any place that does TIG welding will do it for you.

Something I'd suggest though is getting the plate longer at the front since it's already started gathering stuff between the sump and plate at the front. I feel like if I hit the front of the plate with something solid it'll rip the whole thing off instead of just putting another hole in the sump

If your not getting an oil level reading when empty possibly it's been coded out of the dash.
This means it could have been faulty and somewhere down the line it's been coded out
                              Worth checking.
