So the mechanic that said it was the AC, when he got it all apart realised its actually the power steering pump.

I was pretty stoked about that as I figured a power steering pump will be a lot less than a AC compressor. His suppliers opened up today and the quote Ive got from his is the power steering pump and pulley is $900 and the total job will be $1900. This seems like a lot to me, but I'm not in the trade so it could be reasonable.

Is $1900 too much or just about right for a power steering pump/pulley replacement with drive belt tensioner replaced also?

    Thanks.
A genuine pump from ECS or Pelican Parts is in the order of $800 landed. The pump itself is the easiest of the three ancillary items (A/C compressor, alternator, water pump) to replace. Allowing for a new serpentine belt and labour of say four hours (should take less), new fluid (VW approved) and his quote of $900 for the pump (which with markup is about right-you could go non-genuine a lot cheaper), my estimate is about $400 less than what has been quoted.
