MK 4 AC Compressor

Hey guys,

my 2001 golf gti has crapped itself and has the worst clanging chattering noise.

I had someone look at it today and they said it needs a new AC compressor, auto belt tensioner pullery and drive belt.

He couldn't give an exact price as he couldnt get a price for the parts from the dealer but he expects at least $2000.

As this is the worst time of the year I'm trying to sort some parts myself.

So my question is does anyone know of a mk4 gti being wrecked or know where to source these parts cheaper than the dealer?

GAP sells them, may want to confirm years/part # though.

Are your thermofans working correctly? (ie BOTH fans come on when A/C is turned on?)
Common for these to fail causing A/C comp to work harder and eventually failure. (almost happened to me)

Also, spin the A/C compressor with your hand, does it feel smooth or....rough/hard?

google Sanden SD7V16 - that is the unit in these vehicles.

I am in the process of rebuilding mine but looking to ebay one if the bench test fails.

You will need a new tensioner and would suggest while you are at it, if the car has done some clicks, to replace the water pump too.

You also need the model number - SD7V16 is the main Sanden number on a wide range of VAG compressors including my old V5 unit which spins backwards to the 4 cylinder units. There is a model number on the same sticker that says SD7V16. Genuine ones are expensive, if you try JM AutoAir in Campsie, Sydney, you can get a direct replacement compressor brand new for about $350.

I'm not sure either. All I know is the v5 motor has a double-sided serpentine belt and the compressor runs off the back of it. I think my model number was 1215 from (fading) memory. The guy at JM AutoAir asked me for the model number when I gave him just the SD7V16 number, but he was easily able to find it just based on the year and engine of the car. Good luck re-building yours, I didn't realise they were serviceable, can you get parts? After getting a quote of over $800 for a Sanden replacement it would be well worth the effort!

fishburgr, you have a few options with the compressor ranging from $350 for a replacement one, maybe even cheaper if you really dig. Belt should be very cheap, less than $50. Tensioner might need doing, but again it shouldn't be too much. And replacing the compressor yourself isn't that hard once the belt is off. But unfortunately even just a pure re-gas often comes in at over $100. It all adds up doesn't it!

My compressor was not pulling down even though gas was fine. The suggested fix is the internal control valve. So will drain the oil and replace with new, spin it and get some gauges attached to see if if will do it's thing. If not it will be a new unit. It such a PITA to remove and replace that I only wish to do this once.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the replies and info, havent been back on the forum due to christmas and I am just now sitting down to try and chase up the parts and get the repairs done.

Abreut $350 would be nice as this repairer quoted $800 just for the compressor. That was new but not genuine VW.

Ryan - I cant test the thermo fans now because Im too scared to run the car log enough for it to heat up, the noise it makes is just horrifying, theres metal shavings all under the compresor according to the lube mobil mechanic that looked at it.

Pope - yeah I also need the timing belt done, if I can find the coin I should get them to do that at the same time.

Ok so Im going to hit up a few places now looking for parts.

Sounds like the compressor clutch bearing is shot. I should also mention the receiver drier should also be replaced since you will be regassing.

Also if you see any bits of debris in the oil that drains out of your old compressor or the lines once you pull off the lines, then the system has to be flushed too. Otherwise the new compressor is going to cop a load of bad bad stuff. I was lucky with mine, I couldn't see any debris at all in the oil.

But yeah if there is external debris that you're seeing in the general compressor area, that seems like something else like a clutch or bearing like popeclement says. At least that might mean the internal system is free of debris.

Hi Guys,

So the mechanic that said it was the AC, when he got it all apart realised its actually the power steering pump.

I was pretty stoked about that as I figured a power steering pump will be a lot less than a AC compressor. His suppliers opened up today and the quote Ive got from his is the power steering pump and pulley is $900 and the total job will be $1900. This seems like a lot to me, but I'm not in the trade so it could be reasonable.

Is $1900 too much or just about right for a power steering pump/pulley replacement with drive belt tensioner replaced also?

Yeah thats what I figured too. The mechanic is one of the larger franchises and I went with this mechanic as they were the only one open over the Xmas break. As it turns out he couldn't do the work til now anyways as he couldn't source the part. Part of the reason that its so expensive is because itsaa genuine part which is all he could source, but the labour still seems really high to me. I might have to put it off and even try and just delete the power steering all together with one of the kits Ive seen online.
