Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Air Ride Suspension In A MK4 Golf

good evening every one , im starting this thread cause i have noticed that a few people have asked about air ride in the mk4's but there are not many answer or pictures detailing how to do it or what it is .

ill update this as i go throw putting my mk4 on air so people can refer back to this when ever they like but 1st of all this is not a guide at all and i take no responsibility for any thing that you do while installing air ride in your car.

now for all you people that don't know, there are a few key components that you will need , you will need a compressor , air tank , bag's , switch box , a valve block or separate valves and a pressure switch , then all the smaller stuff like air line , gauges , water trap and power wires to power everything and so on.

so this is how im doing it , im starting off with just the rear and ill do the front later next year , i bought a few pieces and other stuff was given to me from my brother cause most of his cars are on air

i bought a set of bolt in rear brackets and 2x RE-5's Slam Specialties Bags form - Innovative Design and Fabrication | IDF | INNFAB - Home Page in the U.S.A, postage was cheap so that's all ways a plus , pictured below is the bags and brackets i bought that are on there way

i bought a AVS switch box off eBay.com as there cheaper with postage then buying on in aus , pictures below is the same one i have coming .

as for my air tank and air gauges i got given it from my brother and i ended up painted the tank to what i like ( its not finished yet)

then there's a box of random stuff i have , air line Both 3/8 and 1/4 , 1/4 is gauge line and 3/8 is for the bags , pressure switch (to turn the compressors on when the air level drops to low and off when it gets enough in it) and a few fittings for the air line to the bag and air line to the tank .

I replaced them about 6 months back when i put my coilovers in but i will prob swap then out again for a shorten shock so it rides a bit nicer and doesn't destroy my coilover shock

            ****UPDATE****

Ok so a bit of a up date with how im going

I received my switch box, bags and brackets last week and my compressors arrived yesterday i also got a moisture trap to stop any water going in to my tank and bags from the compressor

also over the weekend i put some sound deadening matting on the boot floor and when i make the false floor to house everything i will also sound deaden that

i have also been mucking around with the tank and put some extra flake on it , its now got copper flake with a small amount of purple throw it , i just need to do a final clear on top and the tank is done

You want to stop water getting into your valves. Putting the water trap before the tank is pointless.
Put the trap post tank, pre valves. Just drain your tank every month or so

The water comes from the air cooling in your tank, so it'll be in there regardless,
Not much moisture will get to build up in the line that's between the compressor and the tank.
My tank catches most of the moisture, water trap at worst was 15% full once.
Also why I got a tank that wouldn't rust.

was gonna say, its the expansion and cooling of air in the tank that causes the water to build up. only way to stop that any worse is to get one of those air dryer things but coming in at the size of a fridge its kinda useless for a car.. lol

                        looking good.

As dylan said, you only need the water trap: Air from outside > Compressors > Tank >HERE< valve block.

Interesting to see if the slam specialties work!

Dylan8 you are right about the water trap , i dont know what i was thinking but thanks for the input

Well all systems are now go with this , did a mock up yesterday and every thing fits in the spare tyre well nicely , im going to pick up my VU4 valve block tomorrow before work and building a false floor throw the week.

The only things i am waiting on now are , gauge panel , single needle gauge to keep a eye on tank presser and compressor wiring loom and i should have all them by end of the month

i will be installing this early next year when work has gone back to normal and the Christmas rush is over hopefully in the first few weeks of January.....

ill keep you all up to date with this as i start to install
