Conti are a good brand a bit soft wear quicker but no road noise good grip reasonably priced if you shop around
Kuhmo ecsta are a cheaper option good tyre but prone to feathering if w/a is out.
Then if you go higher brands like bstone,Pirelli or Michelin be prepared for cost but definitely good all round.
the Achillies range are a good tyre if you want performance on a budget. plenty of big HP turbo falcons running them with good reports.
We have them on our R33 skyline with no dramas either, plenty of grip. maybe a bit quicker wearing than some of the more $$ tyres but for the money I haven't been able to fault them.
Thanks to all your replies guys I'm looking for around $200 per corner good wet good dry less noise good wear got that track day coming up and like the back roads when they're twisty
KU31s get really noisy & skatey when below 4mm tread.
For $200/corner youve got plenty of high quality choices. Just have a look on the Tempe Tyres website & browse the dozens of other tyre threads on here & you won't go wrong.
My choice (if available) is Michelin PSS followed by PS2 then PS3. (yes, i like Michelin). Goodyear Assymetric 2 would be my next pick

I ordered 4 more Ku31s today, that will be my 3rd set. 1st got over 50,000km, latest got 46,000km.
The wear markers are all the tread I have left and they still pull up quick in the dry.
Michelin PS3 at $250 is a great price but is still more than twice the price of the Kumho @ $110.
I could never get more than 15-20K from Michelin and Pirelli as the tyre compound is so soft, the ratings are 220 vs Kumho 320.
I'm looking forward to killing the last of my tyres in the next few days until the new ones arrive
So for me those premium brands do offer slightly better performance but IMHO it comes at twice the price and half the mileage.
Michelin $1000 for 20,000km
or Kumho $440 for 50,000km. This is what seals the deal for me.
MK4 GTI - Sold
MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.
Except KU31 are effing noisy in the last 2-3mm and they are directional, which kills it for me.
Which Michelin were you running that you only managed 20,000km? I've always found them to be long wearing. A lot of my mates run PSS, PS2 & PS3 & they all find them great on wear.
I found the KU31 to be a short lived tyre for my chaassis / driving style.
I also put 4 KU31 on Dad's Accord Euro because of the price and they were a bit of a disaster (really weird wear patterns) but I put that down to the driver & crap alignment.
225/40r18 KU31 run about $140ea in Sydney. I assume that they are $110 at Paradise Garage or whatever that cheap Kumho place is in Brissy?
I do about 25,000km/pa and if I was shelling out $1k every 9 months for tyres I'd be rethinking my tyre purchase stategy too. I'm happy to spend the money every 18 months.

A little update.
I've had the new Kumhos on for a little while and I can say they are noticeably quieter and much more grippy than the ones that came off.
So this does support the comments that the KU31 does get louder and less grippy over time. I guess you don't notice the gradual increase in noise and reduction of grip over the years. But going new again it is obvious.
