  • To chip or not to chip

Car is currently at European Car Centre in Newcastle getting engine mounts fixed up. They deal Powerchip upgrades and I was looking into getting one done whilst it's in there, anybody have an experience with these?

Car is standard 1999 Gti. I was planning to do dump pipe & cat as well.

Also the car has 190k, would this be too aged of a car to be worth spending money on?

How much is the Powerchip? There's plenty of other options out there.

If the car has decent service history I don't see why tuning it at 190000 should be a problem. Sparkplugs, ignition control modules, vacuum lines and diverter valves are common failure points.

It's $1295, they claim it's good for 145kw chip alone. Doesn't seem like a huge increase for the dollars to me, I'm fairly uneducated in this regard though.

My car is there at the moment as well ! They do a good job... I'm just in for a service, though.

most chips will do a deal @ $1000... if you're keen. Say you've seen plenty of other chips running this offer and im sure they'd match it.

I'm finding it hard to find info on these chips, APR and BSR seem like the more popular item. So I might contact these companies first.

it's certainly towards the end of it's life. Well designed 4cyl. engine should last 250, 000km. also there are other components that will be quite worn out, like the transmission, the axles and running more torque through them will stress them more then in the cars that done less than 100, 000km or are brand new. Of course you can always rebuild or replace.
But, I'd rather start with a younger car.

6000km left on my A4 Miro I have had dramas with everything around the engine but the motor itself has held up ok.

I have had the powerchip tune on my Polo Gti 2006 1.8T and also run it on my Jetta 147Kw 2.0TFSI the tune is good but you will need to add the labour and dyno charge of around $500 on top.
My advice would be to go with the Custom Code tune it is better value, I am running a different tune now I am stage 2 on my Jetta but was happy on the Powerchip tune at stock.

Gavin where are you based mate? How would you go about doing a car in Newcastle?

My plans for the car is just a daily drive at the moment, however I work away so it doesn't get driven all that often anyway. I am hoping to do some track days in the near future, and obviously a bit more power will make that more enjoyable. Probably do a suspension overhaul at some point as well (lowered at the moment but I'll probably go down the coil overs path).

I am looking at a gti with 200k on it, with good service history I don't see why there would be a drama with a 200k plus car.
my current 1998 festiva 1.5 has 355k km on it and is only just showing signs of blowing a bit of smoke on start up and getting a bit noisy and its a crappy jap/korean ultra budget car....

I am in Brisbane, the ECU needs to come out to either flash or solder in the chip depending on who you choose. You can post it to me and get it back 2 days later, using express post.
