You should at least ask VW how much before dismissing them completely.

How big is the crack? Can it be repaired?

Agree with this. Sometimes you can be surprised by dealer pricing (in a good way) ... It's pretty rare, but when it happens you'll be glad you checked.

If the crack is not too bad, it may be able to be welded. Otherwise there is eBay/ wreckers ...

Sumps are a couple of hundred to buy, plus goo and a new sump plug (don't re-use the old one. Ever.).

Does it have the oil level sensor in it? If not, you'll need to factor one of them in as well, as you can't buy the non-oil sensor sumps anymore.

I just looked on ETKA and it looks like they are the same as the 06A engines. I have one from an NA A3 here, no oil level sensor hole. 038103601NA is the part number I have.

Find part number on item of ETKA.
Type Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles, Coupons and More | eBay or Pelican Parts - Porsche Parts & BMW Parts & Mercedes Parts - Automotive Parts and Accessories - Porsche & BMW & Mercedes into your address bar.
              Find part.
              Order and pay.
Go to volkswagen and buy sealant for $40.
              Undo screws on broken sump.
              Drain oil.
              Fit new sump with sealant.
Go to Super Cheap auto and buy VW approved Penrite oil and filter.
              Fill and done.

Nothing complex mate. Thank god for VW part numbers on every part.

Hardest part is undo-ing the 4 bolts hidden up behind the flywheel.

You need a long ball-end allen key socket.
