First start since my engine swap!

Planning on getting my 1.6 started today for the first time in about 6 months.
Was going to get some coolant and some cheap crappy oil to start the car and let it idle, drain the cheap oil and replace with good oil. The last oil I put in was Shell's 5W 40 I'm pretty sure.
Any advice, hints or tips???

Putting the cheap oil through to heat it up and thin it out so there's no chance of any crap sitting in the sump

Topped up the coolant and changed the oil. The car starts but stalls itself within 2 seconds which seems to me it'll be something to do with the fuel, before the engine swap the fuel pump, lines and filter were all working fine. There's ¼ of a tank which I just put in and still no start. Charged the battery the other day, put my multimeter across the battery and was reading 12.5V but when I tried starting it again everything had reset like the battery had died so had to put it on charge again. Can anyone give any suggestions? Wasn't sure whether it might need to be half full for the fuel pump or sensor to kick in?

Sounds like the battery has lost a cell, it's a lost cause really as lots of electrics will fail when the voltage drops too far
Put your multimeter over the battery and watch the voltage while your partner turns the headlights on, I bet it will drop below 10v

Turned the headlights on and it dropped to 11.8V, tried to start it again and it kicked over and stalled then a whizzing a reaching sound came from around the starter motor but not sure if ® was actually the starter or the gearbox or anything. I just want it back on the road

Don't worry about the starter, lots of them screech like that when they disengage. I think the battery is good. Are you trying to rev the engine as you start it?

I haven't had a 1.6 but it probably needs a throttle body alignment, if the battery has been disconnected. Google that as I don;t know that for sure.

If it keeps stalling there's probably a big airleak somewhere, booster vac pipe would be big enough to stop it running.

I thought the battery would be fine too, yer I've been trying to start it while revving and tried without revving but it's the same thing. Not sure what or where the throttle body is though

on the 1.6 if you take the engine cover off , you will see the intake manifold at the back of it is a pipe that leads to the air box the thorttle body connects to that on the pipe

Googled it and I feel like an idiot for not knowing what it was but I've found a DIY on cleaning out the throttle body so I'm going to give it a go tomorrow arvo and see if she'll start. I didn't want to start pulling everything apart before I even got it back on the road...and rego's out in 3 months so wanted to spend it driving ha

Got the throttle body out ready for cleaning, everywhere I've searched says they've used throttle body cleaner or something, would warm/hot water be a good cleaner without damaging anything?

Does water attack oil?

Buy some $3 degreaser from supercheap or a splash of petrol.

Don't have a way of getting out of the house at the moment so luckily I found a little bit of petrol in the bottom of the jerry can, thanks gav

Cleaned out the TB, tried starting the car again and the instrument lights flash and fail as if the batteries dying, charged the battery and tried starting it again but still no luck, everything looks and seems to be connected properly, everything was working before the swap including the new engine

You can go old school and check there's fuel and a spark after that.

You need to find someone with VCDS, don't waste any more time on it until you have scanned it. It's just pissing into the wind.

When you say old school do you mean pulling a spark plug lead off the coilpack or something? I put in a 10L of fuel in 2 days ago and it's saying I have half a tank but how do I tell if the fuel pumps working? Don't want to be asking stupid questions to everyone else but I don't know too many golf enthusiasts around my area and I don't have too much of an idea on what I'm doing basically unless I see something online
