  • My Bora sounds like a vacuum cleaner

    Hi Volks

I notice every time I start the car, i can hear a high pitch whistling noise from the engine.
The noise literally sounds like a vacuum cleaner. And I open the bonnet and listen closer, the noise seems to be coming from just behind the right hand corner of the front grill, between front grill and the engine block. If I put my hand in the area between right side of the engine block and the battery, I can feel a very very light breath. There are quite a few hoses in this area, so would that be some old leaky hoses that's sucking air?

This noise will stop after a minute or so after the car is started, so does the light breath mentioned above.
During driving, this noise will come on randomly for a minute or so.

The car drives and feels normal otherwise. The car is a V5.

Would anyone has any suggestions of what possibly causes this?

    Thanks in advance.

sounds like your secondary air pump hose has come off. in that area where you were looking there should be a black plastic unit. quite big and held on with 3 ten mm nuts. you need to check both ends of this unit as the pipes get slack after time and fall off sometimes just need to be refitted... if you cant find the pump look for the engine air filter.. on the airbox itself there should be the main intake to the engine and then you will see another about 3cm wide. this is the secondary air hose from the filter to the pump. that might even be the part disconnected... if not follow that pipe towards the engine and you will locate the pump unit... make sure they are all fitted ok then try a cold start of your car... ....VDUB...

      Thank you so much! VDUB
I had a look today, and found that the hose that plug onto the secondary air pump did not clip in.
Man, that space is so tight and so deep down, but I manage to clip it back on.
And there's no noise ever after.

Thanks for the tip, you are a legend.
