  • experiencing knocking noice after coilover installation?

Hey guys so as the title states I'm hearing some knocking from the front mainly the drivers side but sometimes the passenger side front . Ive just installed kw v1's the other weekend and it's a loud knocking noice especially when I take off. I've ordered some new top mount bushes and bearing kit from ecs as I did notice the gap from where the coilovers mount to the body of the car aswell as some new nuts and bolts. Everything's nice and tight so it doesn't seem to be any loose parts. I did think I maybe could of been the cv joints but I'm no expert here.

Any other suggestions from previous experiences?

Not likely to be CV joints at all. Have a look at the ARB links, bottom ball joints and the track rod ends.

Are you sure it's not the engine rocking due to a worn dog bone mount? If it only happens on take off

hey gavin how would i check if its the dog bone mount? while I'm driving i hear some knocking too but its loudest on take off. tie rod ends and ball joints would make that loud of a noise and i checked them today and nothing seems to be loose :/

The ball joints and track rods probably won't make noise unless they are unloaded. I had one on my S3 that was completely flogged out, only noticed when I undid it to change the tops mounts. Then you could feel and hear the freeplay. You can remove the pinch bolt and drop the arm without affecting alignment.

If you have a rubber dog bone, it's probably long past it's best. I can't remember if you are running a GTI or not.

i've got the same noise when i break hard .. im pretty sure it would be the control arm bushings .. they dont look too healthy ..
i also noticed a bit of movement when i try to take off the wheel on the driver side .. as in lateral movement of the whole control arm .. i think im definitely due for new bushings ..

if i go polythrene would that cause too much vibration transmitted to the steering wheel ?

            cheers

It can be caused by existing bushes been worn in a certain point, then once the lowering is done the pressure is applied to another point.
I had this with my control arms and they would pop in and out of the warn section once lowered.

How low are you? It's not the driveshaft hitting your front arb is it?

Not extremely low lachlan, more than 100mm off the ground. I have no idea what it is atm, hoping it is the top mounts but ill wait and see i guess.

Upgrading your arb's at some point is probably not a bad idea anyway - rear is definitely good value. Mine corners like it's on rails now.

Sway bars on drive shafts and control arms gives a grinding noise rather then a knocking noise.
Iv got money on a bush somewhere from previous wear

Is it a squeek or knock? A couple of us 6r polo guys are having an issue with what sounds like a knock inside the cabin with KW V1's but if you get in the engine bay and give the front end a push down its a squeek thats resonating through the body/mounting points in the wheel arch.
Seeing as though the golf mk4 and 6r polo share alot of suspension parts im guessing its the same issue you're having
