  • Bash plate to protect your sump!

    Hey guys

So I've been in talks with Fabulous Fabrications in Ipswich, QLD about making a custom bash plate for my Bora 4mo. Seems how low the sump sits and the many unfortunate stories I've heard, I've decided it's a necessity when lowering my car.

I'm going to be heading out to see them in a week or two so we can get started on the design and fitment etc.
I mentioned there might be some interest in other MK4 owners buying one? So wanted to start this thread to see who is keen for one. The more people who are added to the order, the cheaper it'll be.

As it is, I'm predicting around the $150 mark based off other bash plates for jap cars, but I won't know exact cost until I get my car sized up.

Here's an example pic of one fitted to an S13 Silvia

Yes. Exactly what I'm after for my golf. I'm in Melbourne though but happy to pay shipping depending on the cost..

Will have to confirm if the under carriage of a V6 is different from the 4/5cyl mk4's?

I'll try get the ball rolling in the coming week and have a finished product to test fit to my car and negotiate a price.

Should be able to get it cheap if say 10 people want one? See what happens

These come standard on old Saab 900s. Fitted a couple to audis back in the day. Just saying in case anyone wants a budget option. Whichever one you get it will still require mounting to the car, that is the hard bit.

50mm cutout for sump plug would make servicing a lot more friendly too..

good point. ill factor that into the design. should be simple enough to drill out a hole big enough to undo the plug

This is the diesel geek skid plate I had on my GLI VR6,

MK4 Jetta Golf New Beetle GTI R32 skid plate

With a VR6 you'll sleep better at night knowing you have one. The oil pan is aluminum and when you lower our car it sits really low. You can fit an MK3 steal oil pan, get an after marked steal hybrid, or risk cracking the pan and paying loads more for a new pan (if you're lucky). Remember aluminum cracks and alumininum oil pan cracks look nasty!

Pretty sure the fitment for all MK4s are the same. The DG one I had comes in two pieces. The skid plate, a bar that connects the frame together, and the riv nuts you use to connect it all (along with the riv nut tool you need). Once installed, it really tightens up the front end. I didn't feel like I needed a front sway bar. it sits about and 3/4 of an inch below your oil pan, so if you slam your ride it's very close to the ground. The plate is 1/8 inch thick and happily take a beating. I used to send road turtles flying out the back of my car when I changed lanes on the freeway, but like I said, I slept well.

Just wanted to add that the picture of the car being jacked up by the skid plate doesn't have an engine in it. Don't try that at home!

You can find the specs and cad designs on th tex, if not I think I have them somewhere.

If your guy can make a comparable one for around $150, I'm in like Flynn. Otherwise maybe we can organize a GB with DG.

                          Keep me posted.

Agree with this - no way I'd want to be removing it each time I'm due an oil change.

This always killed it for me.
Needing a much clearance as possible I cant afford to go adding stuff to the car to make the body lower.

Lucky for me 2lt life style means I can go lower then you 4mo kids
