Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Have I broken an engine mount?

So, I haven't had much time to try and work out what I've done, but I have started getting a little bit of a knock from the front end over bumps.
Last year my sway bar link came undone and was knocking on some bumps, its a similar noise, so I jacked the car up on Monday arvo and gave the sway bar link a good push and shove, nothing. But, when I turned the wheel against the gearbox (ie, just turned it while it was jacked up as much as I could) I noticed the engine moved (rotated) slightly front and back. Now, I can't be certain, but it seemed to move more than it has in the past and I wasn't giving the wheel a hard time, it was just a leisurely rotate.

I can get under and check the dogbone - I did replace that last year. Its a similar kind of rotation as when the dogbone was out. But, what else can I check?

    Thanks guys,

    Christian

    engine mount sounds right.
However, CV joints can make knocking sounds when they are gone too. Check for split boots for starters

Yeah it's not the clicking of a cv and no worse when turning. So don't think it's that. Will crawl under the car and check dogbone.

Thought my front left shock was blown, end up being my dogbone mount.

the round bush was leaking oil. it's the second 1 ive installed.

The bush doesnt hold oil , thats either gearbox oil or engine oil thats leaking !

Check where that oil is coming from.

I still have my old dogbone and bush (new one has only been in for 2000k's or so) so I can switch them over if needed.
