  • Help on removing oil filter

    Hi,

Just wondering if there was a special way to remove the oil filter as it seems impossible to remove by twisting it.

    Here's a photo

    Thanks for any input guys

Multigrips? Yeah this one was fitted on by the previous owner. Just got back from VW with an OEM oil filter but can't get this one off!

You need a "strap wrench". The strap wraps around the filter body and the handle then twists it off. Any auto accessory shop should have them. Best of all, you could ask if you could try is to see if it would fit.

Now there is an "Irish" version, however it gets messy. Basically, you stab it with a screwdriver and get it off that way. It is a last resort, and sometimes, even that can have issues.

The strap wrench sounds good. Do you know if hardware places sell these? Etc. Bunnings?

          Thanks bud

Bunnings might, but Supercheap definately would.

As Seb suggested, buy the biggest pair of multi-grips Supercheap sell. They'll get it off without much trouble.

Or pierce it sideways with a long bladed screwdriver and use the leverage to crack it.

                  If you do this makesure

You puncture through towards the end, away from the engine, use a posidrive/phillips head screwdriver.

                  Punch right through and turn.

Also when you put the new one on , put a thin film of oil around the sealing rubber ring before you screw on and tighten

Yeah it ain't coming off, bought a strap wrench and a tool that goes around the bottom of the oil filter that you can connect a ratchet to but it broke.. Gave up in the end. Have it booked in at Audvolks in a few weeks so it should be ok. Thanks for the input fellas, appreciate it!

I don't think it will offer the leverage required.

Yep, that's the one I got. Didn't budge, also used a leather belt (found it to be more useful) but still wouldn't budge

Anyway, new problem. Checking the oil level with the dipstick and whilst inserting the dipstick back in the dipstick housing/tube cracked. Just not my day today.. what should have been a 30 min job has left me carless

Anyone know if these tube are easy to source from the dealers?

Most of the bigger dealers should have them on the shelf, if not, they'll be able to get you one overnight.
