Testing the fans is easy watch this video VW Golf Mk3 VR6 - How to Test Radiator Fan - YouTube
If they do low and high the problem is not the fan but something else.MK4 GTI - Sold
MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.

low and high problem is something else, the temp sender to the fans or the fan control module.
No fans at all - fuse or fan resistors, or dud fans.
I have one fans working, one not- one dud resistor, if this keeps up, the second one eventually goes and you lose the lot - fans and ac

my fans spin but on and off and no aircon.Passat 1.8T K04 | Audi A3 1.8T | Bora 4Motion

i think the temp sensor is a 3 pin plug that is on the bottom left of the radiator area. check my links above, some great info there

Fans are reqd to cool the condensor, temp is related to pressure so if the temp goes up then the pressure does too, too high itll trigger the high pressure switch and shut your aircon off, if it didnt have such system you would have a hose blowing to bits under high pressure, thats why you have fans on. This is the case for EVERY AC system, ANYWHERE. Ok the compressor in your car can still have the clutch pulling in buit internally it can still be stuck, it is a variable displacement compressor, if it were the case the guy gassing it up should be able to tell . With the gauges hooked up you can see if the high and low are right or not, when its stuffed there is no reaction to the clutch kicking in,m it just stays static, its the only way to test it, if you find this is the case then the compressor is the culprit. If the clutch is kicking in itll be fair to say the connection at the fuebox on the battery will be ok. If the fans are coming on then itll be fair to say the ECU controlling them is good too. Full of gas and not cool can then only be a bad compressor or a blend door staying open in the cabin bleeding hot air with the cold
Cheers

Hi Jmac seems like you understand the aircon stuff,Iv got a question for you.
What does it mean if on a cool day i have a/c working but the fans seem to spin alot faster (louder), And on a warm or hot day when you really want it the a/c doesnt work.
The high pressure is at 100psi and low pressure valve showed 80psi and when they tested the pressure it was a hot day so now a/c.
In december i had a tow bar go through the radiator and condensor which was replaced new.
Iv been to 2 places and they seem to be lazy to have proper look and just stare at it and say youl need to bring it another time.effin annoying.
Thanks for your info

The Fan speed depeding on your model is based upon A/C system pressure. Some models have a high pressure switch which turns the fans to High speed when the pressure reaches 16 Bar. The other type of sensor transmits a signal to the ECU which then decides how best to manage things. FYI the a/c system high pressure cut-out pressure is 32bar, with a reset point of 24 bar.
If you have a high side pressure of 100psi and low side of 80 with the compressor running something is wrong. Maybe an issue with the expansion valve, or the compressor itself. Really you need put a set of gauges on it with the a/c system off then turn it on and watch the gauges and see what they show. Normal High Side should be in the region of 16bar with the low side around 1.5-2.5 bar. (dependant on ambient temp)

got my mate to chuck his guages on it last night, we got Low 60 psi and high 290 psi. The fans seem to kick in on high speed sometimes when I have the engine running and switch the A/C on. They spin on high for about 5 seconds or something? Then they just stop. Is my compressor stuffed? Or should I be looking and the fans first to make sure they are functioning on high and low speed correctly.
