Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • A/C regassed still not blowing cold

Basically got my a/c regassed last night thinking that was why my aircon wasn't working. Did a leak test, nothing came up. I can hear the compressor engage when I turn the temp all the way down(climatronic system) and the revs change as I do it. Anyone had this sort of thing happen? If the compressor engages does that mean that it should be working fine? Thought I'd throw this one out there and see if anyone comes up with anything. I know A/c systems in our cars cost the earth to fix. So i might just have to deal with it not working. haha

Is there any checks I can do?

have you checked the fuses ontop of the battery?

I havn't checked them in aaaages, so I guess that would be a start! Any other ways that I can check for problems? I have got a cheapo ebay cable and VCDSlite but I can't for the life of me get it to work. So I can't diagnose it to see if I'm getting any errors.

Are your fans kicking in straight away and pulsing?

You would need to look at the compressor to see it engaging.
The engine note changes when the AC system calls for the compressor to enagage, does not mean it is actually engaging.
Check the restance on the field coil.

definitely check this - the ac gets its power from the low speed fan circuit. The fans have internal resistors that help regulate fast and slow speed. They have a habit of burning out. With one fan out, things still work, but once both fans have gone you also lose the ac. I am currently fixing exactly this.

The most likely causes of ac failure are usually the thermo fans and then the fan control unit, well before failure of major parts like the compressor....

With the car on, engage the ac, both fans should come on. They are not dependent on load, time , engine temp to turn on with the ac - so if the ac is on, so should be both the thermo fans.

i have the same issue actually lol..
just too much of a headache... i changed my fan control module but still no go!

how do you test the resisters?

Fans definitely need to be working to cool the gas back to liquid if they do not work no a/c!! If fan module has been replaced might be fans.

only thing worrying me about changing the fans is they still kick in, but pulsing all the time and straight away once i turn the keys.

                  could it be thermostat?

The fans dont cool the gas, it's that the power feed for the ac compressor comes from the slow fan circuit.

here is a fan check, ignore the type of car, still the same operation:

Here is how you can fix the fans:

And here is the way I am doing it, Instead of replacing the fan resistors (bigger job than it sounds) or buying new fans (which will still have crap resistors which will burn out over time again, and cost heaps...) you bypass the fan resistors and put two new big beefy ones in circuit. Total cost to me was $8 for the resistors (from China), $5 for scrap aluminium and I had the wire, hooking mine up tomorrow...
This fan repair modification was developed for a 2002 model V5 Golf, it will probably be OK for other Golf models especially the V6

If the fans don't cool the gas then what purpose to they serve???

Thanks for the replies! I'll have to get out and have someone flick the ac on go me to check all this!

I am talking about the 2 big thermo fans behind the radiator. The ac gets its power from the low speed circuit.
Their job is to draw air through the radiator, and consequently through the ac condenser, so yes i guess they do consequently cool the ag

checked my fans last night, couldn't get them to spin after numerous times getting someone to flick the A/C on and off. Got them to spin only once, but not for long. Is it weird that neither of them spun?
