  • Coolant Litres?

    Hi Guys,

    I'm new to this Forum and glad to be here.

    I'm about to get my mechanic to flush out my coolant for the first time in 3 years on my MK4 Golf GTI and can't seem to find the total amount of litres/Coolant in the handbook...I have G12 coolant which is noted as 40% mix, but no total amount with water?

    any help would be good

    Thanks

    Welcome to the forums!

    When it comes to G12 I have only ever bought the pre-mix stuff (which is suprisingly expensive compared to the green stuff). As for how much the system itself takes, I'm not even sure how much my Mk3 takes, although after pulling one of the sensor and letting it drain from that point it then took about 4L to fill it back up.

    I have read about people replacing coolant pumps and onyl needing 2 - 3L to re-fill the system, but I think they are quicker than me.

    In my case I would get 2 x 4L and hope for the best... or ask the experts first. This sounds like one of those time we should wait for the Mk4 experts.

    If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

      coolant

      Hi all,

      Is the coolant specified anything special or can we use similar coolant as other cars?

      I had to replace the power steering fluid and had to buy the "special vw stuff"

      just wondering if the coolant is the same deal?

          That is what this forum is for. Asking questions and getting sensible answers.
          I usually add 3 litres of G12+ on a flush
          Cheers, Andrew

            Well, just to make sure its mixed correctly 40% G12 - 60% water, and also going by the handbbok it's very important I suppose?

              Thanks Andrew,

              I'll let my mechanic know what the ratio is.

                  Purple, isn't it supposed to be pink? Mine is...
                  I have thought about doing this also, or is the new G12 purple only?

                      All - please keep this on topic. For those that are confused - it's related to coolant, types, quantitys and ratios. Keep your mouthing off else where please - keep the posts usefull or I'll delete.

                      Sory for butchering this post.

                      Thanks

                        As to the coolant, it's all pretty simple:

                        * Use demineralised water
                        * Follow ratios on bottle
                        * Only use G12+. If you are in the outback and low on coolant, you're much better off using straight water than green coolant or any coolant other than G12 (unless you think replacing entire cooling systems is fun).
