GTI = 140kw+ (chipped)
2.0L = has no more than 100kw.
if the 2.0L is enough power for you than go for that, otherwise the gti with some minor mods will have plenty more power.

Ah there is no 'rush of boost' in a standard GTI - If someone sat in it I reckon you wouldn't even tell it was turbo - Power delivery is VERY smooth, and even in a chipped 1.8T, it only throws you back into your seat if you plant your foot.

I don't know about you guys - But I couldn't own a 2.0L knowing 1.6L civics are quicker than it.

Funny thing is... I didn't even tell my GF it was a turbo until AFTER I had bought it, and she drove it beforehand too...
She was shocked when i told her it was a turbo. Then she said "oh no... you're going to spend lots of money doing it up aren't you?"...

Hiya all, Just Cars was $1500 but Shannons was $1200! Does anyone have experience with them at all as insurers. Just wondering why they're so cheap? Oh btw AAMI GIO and NRMA were all around the same. ING was $1450, didn't even know they did insurance...

Soo, I'm inspecting a 2001 GTi on Friday, anything to look out for other then service schedule? I'm actually looking at a 2000 WRX hatchback auto tomorrow (don't hate me!), more for curiosities sake though as NRMA would charge me $3400 for their premium (Shannon's would be $1900 though).

Woohoo!

Man what a disappointment! The WRX auto was quick off the mark but struggled to get into 2nd. Once in second the automatic transmission was smooth except for the fact that there was an audible clunk when it moved into third gear... I'm not sure if it's normal or whether the car was not properly maintained but wow I was surprised by it...

Although it did have a "power" (overdrive?) button on the gear stick which made the WRX really lift into life, but how many times are you going to press that in the streets of Sydney...

Anyway so I checked out a 2001 GTi with 77K on the clock yesterday and well although you can't really compare an auto with a manual what a difference! Much smoother ride and nice power moving through the gears. I offered her 17K for it which he accepted!

One thing I didn't do is a REVS check (whoops!). I'm going to have to ask him over the phone for them before I hand over the cash so I wondering if someone could tell me where the vin or chassis number is and engine number is, just in case he doesn't know?

Also although I'm happy with my purchase do you all think it was cheap/reasonable/expensive if the car had a couple of scratches on the bonnet and a scuffed back bumper bar on the side but other then that in schmick condition?

17k is a great price for a GTI with 77ks on the clock imo!

Should be able to get the VIN off the rego sticker, if not I believe it is in a cutout on the black panel under the bonnet where the wiper motors are.

Congrats dude - Now to get it chipped.

PS. Buying an Auto WRX is like buying a Horse with 3 legs. The power button would have just changed the shift points on the gearbox, making it a little livelier - But if its clunking when changing gears i'd have just run for the hills.

VIN No (Compliance Plate) and Build Date information is in the rear hatch, under the carpet, next to the spare tyre! (if that makes sense!)

Also as previously advised, it is stamped on the panel in the engine bay between the wipers.

I'm guessing you can, the Mk3 had that functionality for incrediably tight parking. I'm pretty sure the mk4 does too just turn the mirrors inwards and don't be afraid to use a little force either...
