GTi or 2.0L option

Hi guys,

First time poster long time reader! Just wondering if I could get your guys input on what would be the better option.

There's 2 vw golfs on sale one is a 2000 GTi with ~90K on the clock for $16500 and the other a 2001 2.0 L with ~60K on the clock for $16000 (both silver). What would be the better buy in times of durability and driving satisfaction (if ya know what I mean!)?

The GTi is calling out to me but the K's are scaring me...

Welcome!!! 90k isnt that bad for a 2000 GTI, because the GTI is Forced Induction you would have more room for tuning if thats your bag. The 2 litres are often refered to as the 2.SLOW's (no offence to anyone who has one!! ) but are still top cars. Either way...your joining the Golf club, so cant be that bad!!

im a bit biased but ill try to be unbiased... the 00 gti comes with the recaros(written on the seats) and sunroof as standard.the 2l didnt.the 2l is alot slower than the 1.8t gti(sorry 2l drivers). 90k for a 7yr old vw is not alot but if the car has had a hard life , any amount of k's would be a issue.
are you intending on doing some mods to the car or leaving a stock?

Haha yeah I've liked the golfs for a long time. New model looks v. nice but probably (def!) out of my price range!

Like I said the GTi is calling but I was wondering if there was a website to show the required services at specified K's for them. I tried googling but to no luck.

No big issues with the 1.8T motor as long as the cam belt and tensioner are changed on time or early.
Any other problems are just as likely to affect either model.

I had a Passat in the UK which had 130000 miles on it, no mechanical issues at all.

Again I may be kust a little bit biased but your getting so much more of a car with the Gti. I got mine that is a year old and with a few more k's at a similar price and I couln't be any happier with it if i tried.

If you are pasionate about cars then the gti delivers above expectations. If it's cheaper transport your after go with the 2L.

Have you checked out quote differences for insurance between the two yet? What are the service history like on the pair. Just a few things you should consider before making a decision.

Maybe I should clarify a little - I'd say the 1.8T is MORE reliable than the 2L, especially as the kms start racking up (If it is serviced).

And when you buy the GTI you don't just get a (MUCH) better engine... you get bigger/wider mags, no homo bumper strips, better gearbox, better interior (seats!), better dashboard (LCD info), better lights (height adjustable with foggies inbuilt).. The list goes on and on and on.

The only real downside to the GTI is insurance will be more expensive.

Sorry, not sure I agree with that.
My GTi is daily driven by my girlfriend, and as she is 22 (i'm 28 ) the policy is based on her profile. As a rating 2 driver with 1 at fault, the car is $1300 a year with RACV.
Given that I used to pay $1600 for my (at the time) unmodified v8 Soarer, that's pretty good imo.

i used to drive a V8 Soarer, and it was insured with Just Cars. I was paying $900 a year and i was 24. After that a Liberty B4 came and it was $1200 a year with RAC. now i have a 2004 R32 and its $1080 a year with RAC. I think i have the maximum no claim bonus, as i never had a claim in the last 5 years that i have been in Aus.
I guess it has a lot to do with your driving record, so its different for everyone

I'm only just starting to love my GTI... it's been a bit love/hate but seeming now all the power is starting to hit the ground (note: losing traction in third) things are looking up.

Cars are the devil - things won't be cheap if they die.. and they will if you plan to modify.
