advice on lowering.

hey guys,

im highly considering lowing my car purely for looks. Ive got a 1999 golf gti. i was wondering if i could gather some recommendations on suspension shops that might be able to point me in the right direction. i really just wanna talk to some one about it and figure out a good option and grab a couple of quotes while im at it. im based in melbourne around the east suburbs. ive done a search on the forums for a thread that might cover this but couldn't come up with much.

hopefully some one can help me out seeing as i dont really have much of a clue haha

The only advice I could give is be careful your front sway bar doesn't hit your drive shafts if you go too low....as I believe it does in MKIVs

^^ thanks for the advice. i was also thinking about maybe putting it on bags.. again my knowledge is minimal to all this..

The only advice I could give is be careful your front sway bar doesn't hit your drive shafts if you go too low....as I believe it does in MKIVs

this^^ approx 40mm drop will require a replacement sway bar or end links depending on how low you plan on going.
if your looking to go any more then 40mm with just springs id say get new shocks too.
if you getting new shocks it becomes a bit more pricey and id be looking at coilovers.
if your wanting to really lower the car get air ride as aussie roads suck for lowered VWs

yeah, im leaning more towards the hole coilover thing, unless getting an air ride + install and all that isn't outrageous.

Brand new air ride suspension is expensive. Maybe you could look at eibach prokit or streamline with some Koni str .t shocks about 700 shipped

depends what level on air ride you want to how much it costs, can get kits designed for mkiv cheap like $2k+ from ECS or put it together yourself.
Coilovers will get you fairly low enough, its just a matter of if you can drive it :p

Really good guys, very knowledgable about several european rides, including VWs.

I was referred to them by other VW drivers in Canberra, and I found them really approachable about discussion ride heights for Bora's etc.

Might not help you being in VIC, but anyone else might find them useful.

audi-tone has mentioned that you can get KW v1 coilovers for 850 landed from dpm.

So the question is to you want to be able to adjust the stiffness?
ECS also have some cheap coilys.

Can also verify that the distributor for KW in Australia is in Melbourne!

But if you have loads of money then grab some bagyards.

I have fk highsport coilovers sourced through Lorenz I find the ride quality good I havnt upgraded sway bar so mine hits and the only thing stopping me going super low is having 19s on the car :p and living in a crappy town where I'll most likely bust my sump if I blink

If you want your suspension to last get a set of kws, bilsteins or koni coilovers. They might be a bit more expensive but it pays off in the long run.
