  • Opinions: Supercharged or Turbo?

    Hi all,

Just wondering what peoples opinions were on either supercharging or turboing a 1.6lt golf?? Just wanna do something different and have been getting the car ready to turbo but a friend told me to think about supercharging...

Turbo is more efficient but has a delay. Super charger is instant and will probably cost more overall.
What is you budget, are you doing it yourself ?
You probably already know it will cost less to sell the 1.6 and get a factory turbo car that will deliver better overall performance and reliability.
What happened to selling the Golf to buy a family car ?

    MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold

I'm interested in hearing what advice you get on this also, I've got a 1.6 that needs more.
Dark Grey Mk4 Golf, 1.8T GTI conversion, APR stage 1, stock air intake, FMIC, 3" to 2.5" Exhaust, FK AK Street Coils, Black 18" (Avant Garde M310's ?), tinted tails, ...

I'm sure you have heard it before but if you sell the car and combine the money from that with the money you would spend on turbo/supercharging (Im guessing that would be quite expensive) you could probably buy a good condition 1.8t or a 4motion bora not to mention lots of other fast cars if you wanted to move from vw.

They would give you a much quicker car and a much nicer package overall I think.

        Just my $0.02

Well was going to sell it but I got offered $1500 for a trade in and considering I just spent $7000 on it in the past 18 months repairing things I think it's best I keep it for now on.. A mates giving me an sc12 supercharger just have to sort out how to put it on..

Just thought I'd see if anyone could help out a little

No matter what you choose your gearbox will go pop
your limited with what pressure you can run due to the plastic intake manifold
for a smaller engine your better off running turbo over supercharger
Hardest part/most expensive will be trying to sort out the tune

$1500? jesus. But hey, if your getting a supercharger for free I'd love to see a build thread. Surely you will have to replace quite a few things from stock like whitevr6 said

Well the gearbox should be fine and the sc12 only does about 6 psi. I've replaced so much stuff on my engine it's basically new lol.. But most things have been upgraded like brakes and things...

But I'm gonna give it ago so if anyone can help I'm all ears

But yeah trade in I only got offered $1500 because it has 164,000km on it and because it's 10 years old

Whitevr6 is right. You cant put more power into the 1.6 without upgrading the gearbox as well. They are particularly weak on those cars even with stock power.

Yeah I've already had my gearbox fail 18 months ago. I now have a stronger gearbox which I was told doesn't have the Weaknesses that the original gearbox had... Only one way to find out I guess

that supercharger will give you just enough power to say "i wish i had gone turbo"..

trade in prices suck, you would get alot more privately. look on carsales. use the grey matter in the upstairs room. Sell your dub and buy an already turbo gti or what have you. i picked up a gti for just over 8k in good nick.

youre not desperate to buy, so be smart, and find the good deal.

you could look into whats interchangeable onto a mk4 gti with the parts you've spent on your current car
that way your money isnt wasted plus you get a faster car

There is only 2 reasons I don't want to sell it..
                          1. Is I love the metallic green colour
                          2. Is that it's still under finance for another 2 years.. I paid $12500 for it 3 years ago and the repayments are cheap
