Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2001 beetle not obd compatible?

As the title says. Is this normal for all beetles?

There are OBD, what are you trying to read it with?

Ross-Tech: Home VCDS leads work and there's plenty of other OBD tools that can do it too.

That's why you have an obd plug. Try to interrogate other systems, if you can't you either haven't set your cable up right or your k line is down on the car
Check the led status on the cable if it's red comms are down

There's nothing wrong with the software. Using a non-genuine cable is where you're problem is.

The cable looks fine. In electrical terms there is no reason why the cable would stop it working unless it has the wrong resistor in it. Does anyone except rosstech make a program?

The issue is that the VAGCOM application is designed to ONLY work with a genuine cable - it's not just OBDII, but it has some other functionality in it that acts as a "license key" as such for the software.

VAGTACHO may work with your cable, it lets you do some stuff, but not the full VAGCOM functionality.
                      Nothing to see here...

u may have more luck using an old vagcom version that works with copied cables. much less features though. the site explains this somewhere.

vagtacho needs a different cable from vagcom i believe.

Features arent a concern at this point I just need to know what fault codes it's throwing. The company I got the cable and software off is sending me another free of charge incase its a faulty cable.
