  • 2001 1.6L 8V Heavy on Fuel

    Hi Guys,

Just wondering how many k's you guys get out of the tank on a 1.6L SR engine? Long story short my coolant temp sensor was gone for >12months and the car was drinking through the juice.

Since I got it replaced, its little bit better but still very poor. Last tank I got about 430k's

Mind you my trips are generally <5km one way few times a day and some longer 40k trips on the weekends.

Stuck open or broken thermostat will cause this too, the "new" temp sensor will now be picking up the true cooler temps , then the injection pulse will be wider, have the live data checked.

Cheers, i got it booked in for a full timing + thermostat + waterpump + general service in a few weeks. Should be interesting if this has any effect.

Would resetting the ECU now and after the service be a good idea? Never been reset since new.

I get a pretty consistant 617kms before the light comes on. Just did my timing belt as well as full servce so will interesting to see what figures I get now, old belt had stretched so far as to be a whole tooth longer over a 5 tooth span!!

I regularly (most times) get 750km before the light comes on. I drive mine to work every day and is a combination of city and highway. Because I have been lazy and not replaced my air conditioning compressor, that figure is without air con running

Keen to hear back, pushed my service back a few weeks. Damn bills.

750km? Really? That's on par with most tiny new cars today.

My GTI averages about 9.5 L/100 km (520-570km per tank).

My VR6 can get up to 15L/100km as a combo of how and where I drive it, but then get down to 8L/100km on a trip.

Very short trips + driving hard = bad fuel economy. Take it on a longer trip and check the consumption, could just be a product of how and where rather than anything major.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Just out of curiosity, how long does your commute take?

Half an hour each way to and from work. My car has now done 201,000km and im still getting awesome economy. Has only ever run on 98 octane fuel.

Hi im only new to this forum,
Maybe the excess fuel has ruined your exhaust 02 sensor & may need to be replaced. Try a bottle of nulon injector cleaner in the tank as well.
                            Cheers

Cheers, ill give that a shot.

Would a ORB scan pickup the 02 sensor if indeed its buggered?

                              Just went through 1/3rd of a tank. 130k's :|
