Unless the bolt in the collar of the strut housing wasn't done up tightly you must have hit the mother of all bumps ...

No big bumps, at least that I remember. And I would have remembered. I drive the same route to & from work daily (24k's round trip) and it never even gets looked at on the weekends. I know where all the potholes are on the trip.

The bolt was in nice and tight, he said something about it not lining up, but it looks 'in' properly in the pics, with the 'fin' (for want of a better name) sliding into the housing.

Do your shocks flair out from that point just above the collar? When I was fitting my new shocks the other day, I noticed a slight increase in the width of the shock where it comes to rest above the collar - it seemed to me that when the bolt in the collar is tightened with the 'fin' in place, it would be very difficult to force the shock further into the housing. It's always damn near impossible to get them out when replacing them that's for sure(!)

You'd need quite a lot of pressure to do it - can't remember are you on shocks or coils? (- thought I read somewhere that you were on coils wound up a little - would that place more pressure on the housing at all?)

Hmmm, I dont recall noticing if they get larger in diameter or not.

Yeah, I am on coils, they aren't 'high' by any means. Probably 1.5 finger width between tyre and guard. I'm probably only 50% of the way up the thread. But, I did put them in and it may just be that I didn't tighten it enough. I just don't remember a moment at all when there was either a bump or a bang or a change in steering etc. With what would be required to do this, surely there'd be something memorable that happened. And, as the CV is fine, it looks like it just slipped down slowly and came to a rest, any harder and more damage would have been done to the shaft and CV (well, I'd think so anyway.)

It seems possible that the accumulated pressure might have done this too like you say - maybe over time ... I know with one of my shocks I couldn't seat it any further into the housing by hand so I made sure the 'fin' was aligned then put the wheel back on and slowly lowered that side down to push it in. I could see how the pressure might push it further if the bolt was slightly loose.

Which coilovers do you have? I've got R32 suspension at present, but am considering moving to KWv1 coilovers. There's a very good deal available on vwgolf.net.au on them.

How much were you paying for the R32 suspension?
              Nothing to see here...

Woops, missed a few replies here - sorry guys.

They were FK Streetlines. Now sold.

I had Bilstein B8's put in with my old Eibach springs. SO NICE! The car is a little more Landcruiser-like now, I admit, but it rides and handles beautifully.

Even at the Landcruiser height, I hit (and ultimately ripped off) my front valance on the concrete stopper things at the end of a car spot at Bunnings on the weekend. It was already in exceptionally average condition, stunned that it is still in one piece. Might have to find a replacement.

K&N panel filter in the stock airbox is going well. Super quiet, no real difference in fuel economy though. In two minds about what to do, I'll probably opt for a proper CAI at some stage, but I'm in no hurry.

What I'd really like is to find an R32 exhaust at some stage...

Was at the Skylines Australia Nationals the other day at Wakefield and I've got the track bug again, so I think I'll get some semi's for my TT rims and get the car onto the track, although, that might lead to more suspension and Haldex changes.

So, its been a while since I have done anything at all to the poor hauler.

                        But, got some OEM roof racks on the weekend;

                        Beware the Dubhound.

Also, finally got a new side strip

                        Which, with gentle persuassion, becomes

Almost 3 years I've had my Bora and that bloody missing strip on LHR door is *finally* going to get fixed.

Also bought some leather donut headrests for the rear seats. Pics when they arrive.

How much did the roof racks and the 3xheadrests set you back? Im guessing from the stealership?

Racks were from that man 2 posts up ^

Headrests, I almost dont want to tell you. I looked for so long and have had varying degrees of success, but this wrecker in Vic had them and sold them, posted, for $150! I didn't wait to reply to him, just said yes, they're mine.

The side strip was from a wrecker on eBay for $70 delivered. I don't know, but things seem a lot cheaper this year.
