  • Funny transmission sound?

I get this funny clicking sound when starting off in 1st or reverse.
    no idea what it is.

    anyone know this sound?

is it only in those gears? We had a customer a while ago whos gti was doing the same thing. turned out the thrust washer between reverse gear and the main cluster shaft mounting bracket let go causing the noise ( also bent the reverse gear shaft forks too )

hmmm not sure, might see if i can get it to happen in other gears.

a few things worth mentioning, my gearbox is a little rough in between gears, and sometimes when stationary in neutral, and i change to 1st or 2nd, if physically will not go in unless i let the clutch out a tad to let it spin/move round a bit. I have had a new clutch put in 25,000k's ago and this happend both before and after. so don't think it's the clutch, and can't be the synchro as there is none in reverse.

also, the round bumper in my fairly new 034 motorsports dogbone (the part that mounts to the engine not two bumpers sandwhiched together that face the sub frame) is cracking so possibly is offering too much movement

I have something similar when changing down gears in to 2nd (coming to a intersection etc).
Only seems to happen some times though.

hmmm not sounding comforting, sounding expensive...
i was playing around with gears today, and when engaging and disengaging 2nd with the clutch, i got it to make that same sound i think

i was in 4th and driving through a tunnel today, and think i could hear the same ticking sound.
did i mention the diff has been leaking fluid at the right side drive shaft for a while? :/

I have similar experience when driving forward changing gear from 1st to 2nd, there always a click sound - like release a spring, coming from the bonet. Interestingly, it only happens at the first time changing gear from 1->2, won't repeat in the rest of the drive until stop the engin and start over again.

Had the car checked couple of times, nothing found and none can explain.
                Strange...

Iv been paying a bit more attention to mine since you noted it on here. I also get it changing down from 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd, when releasing the clutch pedal, usually to clicks each time.
How much fluid are you talking? Like visible on the ground?

hmmm nah not visible on the ground (not that i've noticed) but if i was in the one spot long enough i probably would notice.
i really should check it again, as i've wiped it clean so will know if it's leaked much since last time.

It does pool up at the bottom of the dif/tran:

and here is looking upwards to the turbo where it has sprayed around as the axle spins
(and yes i realise the hose clamp has slipped off the TIP... PITA to try get back on, fortunatly the TIP seems to hold position.)

the noises seem to be getting a bit worse, sometimes noticing it in 2nd/3rd/4th

is your noise exactly the same as the one in my video?

Sounds like you've got one of those native dudes from "the gods must be crazy" under there somewhere!

But seriously I'd be checking that leak and if it persists, get it to your mechaninc.

                        I think its the same...
I thought about it, because mines been making the sound few a yr or 2, I wonder if it had something to do with the A8 reps i had on my car, they were silly heavy.
                        are your wheels heavy?

yeah fairly heavy. i posted on vortex, people think it's the axle. which is certainly better than gearbox/tranny!

still haven't found out what it is. another suggestion was swaybar links

cant picture it being the end links, they just grind and clunk when there dead.
Id be keen to know moe about the axel idea? Ill try and point it out to my mechanic next week wen i get a service
