Yeah exactly. That's not a minor deformation of the front end. It's hit a pole or tree or something with some decent force. Also why has the steering wheel been taped up in the interior picture shown. Looks to me more the airbag has gone off and then either been stuffed back in or removed completely and then the wheel taped up.
I'll take a good guess that there's a lot more than 5ks worth of damage to that as well. Quozl's little front end tap on Targa Wrest cost more than that to fix and that was parts donated by a VW dealer at cost price and the workshop who did the repairs basically worked for free.

I've done two recently with this sort of damage. It's not possible to stuff the airbag back in the wheel and have it sit flush, you also can't remove it unless you take out the entire centre piece. (horn/airbag section)
Also the steering wheel tears right open. The passenger side airbag dents the lid when it goes off, which is also not present here.

Possibly the owner had the bags disabled? Either way I would fix it for 5K (based on the parts that I listed previously) and ensure the bags are enabled.

I'm not surprised that usual panel shops or VW would quote a lot more than 5K, thats why its been declared a repairable write off but thats my price to help another VW enthusiast put a brilliant car back on the road. If I had the cash I'd be bidding on it for myself but as it is I already have more cars than garages.

I use nothing but quality paints and spray in a professional booth.

Could it have been a failure of the air bag sensor (or some such)? Just a thought. Don't know why you'd want to disable the bags. I know nothing, though.

Also, note the P plate on the ground in one of the pics.

Looks like the cupholder deployed in the accident.

Also those tailpipes are sticking out more than usual, so I would be inclined to say that the engine is pushed back somewhat in the chassis.

Mechanical damage is probably the biggest issue here. In some of the photos the rear wheels look to have positive camber.
There may also be other issues like cracked sump/stuffed engine, broken mounts etc etc.
Won't know until I can have a proper look.

Hopefully I can get out there Wednesday morning.
If I do, will be sure to let you all know what she sells for.

Yeah looks like there's some rear suspension damage. Positive camber on RHR - probably tripped up a kerb or hit a rock on the way to hitting whatever they hit. By the looks of dirt/dust/debris etc in the engine bay, looks like its taken en excursion off the road into a tree....

Agree tail pipes have moved about 1.5 inches or so rearward too by the look of it....

5k will probably just cover the parts bill if using genuine new parts...

whats the white goopy gunk in the air vents above the bonnet/below windscreen? and the gunk on the windscreen? evidence of fire retardent?

also, the engine looks definitely bent off angle or shaken up. gearbox and/or flywheel/clutch would be shot i'd say.

what do we think it is worth now to buy at auction?

Did see the gunk you speak of but won't know until I see it on the day of auction.
The crap on the windscreen is the same crap that is on all the others cars there. They don't exactly wash damaged cars and they can sit for a couple of months before auction.

Maybe, will let you know what I see on the day. Is listed in the drivable category but Manheims are rarely accurate.

The more mechanical damage, the less its worth.

Pretty standard for damaged auctions. I prefer Pickles as they at least try and give you a description but they are all rough with the cars and bits do go missing.
