What do you want to know and also what do you want to be able to do?

VAGCOM comes with support and is my choice.
Go into the Ross Tech website and check it out

get a V-Checker mate, does almost everything that vagcom does and it doesnt require a pc. Very easy to use

One thing the V-Checker doesn't do is logging of the various readings that your car is capable of putting out - this can be very useful when diagnosing problems.

Not sure how many outputs it can display in real-time either, you can do quite a few using the VAG-COM graphing utility.
            Nothing to see here...

Oh, absolutely - if you're just interested in checking and clearing codes, and some basic changes, it'd be ideal.

i am unsure of the depth of what vag-com is capable of,being new to this computer based tuning, i dont know how deep you can control change and view properties.
and more to the point how much of it i will understand or find benifitial.
for a start i would like to clear the airbag code on the a4 and fault check both cars, and then look at boost tables/readings and try and do some automatic close features for the sunroof and windows??

VAG-COM and V-Checker can both view/clear codes. You should be able to view boost with VAG-COM, not sure about viewing the maps though.

Apparently it's possible in theory to do the sunroof/window closing with VAG-COM, but not everyone's successful in getting it to work. A KVW100 device (~$100) can do that for you though.

If you just want to read codes, clear them and conduct a few basic emission tests you can get the Autel VAG405 for less on EBay. I'm very happy with it, considering its about 1/2 price of any other VAG utility ...but it by no means replaces VAG-COM software, its very handy though.
