  • Broken Dip Stick Tube

    Hi all,

I was just out in the garage doing my weekly checks...you know, oil, water etc.

I pulled out the engine oil dipstick and the top of the dip stick tube snapped off and came out with it ..GRRRRRRRR

What's involved in replacing the dipstick tube on a 1.6L MKIV

I have glued it back in place for now but will need a new one soon.

    Any suggestions????

    Thanks

    Pete

easy, just pull the rest of it off and push the new one onto the metal part of the tube, all done in 5 mins if that, they are about 10 bucks genuine from VW parts and had one in stock last week................VW..........................

      Hi,

Thanks for that. I had a look and it looked like it just pushed on. I'll get one this week.

Yep, what vwtech said. Also, occasionally, they have a metal sleeve in the cylinder block that you'll need to retrieve before it falls into the sump.

As for VW stocking them, you shouldn't have too many issues getting one. Most of the bigger dealers will probably have one on the shelf. Otherwise, they can order one in for you, which you;ll get within a day or so.

          Hi,

Where is this little sleeve you speak of?

I would hate a simple thing like checking the oil to result in the sump having to come off.

The bit of the tube that sticks into the block. If you can't get it out just punch it into the sump. I did that on my old laser when the tube broke on it. Don't worry it won't get caught up on anything.

Haha broken dipstick is such an annoying thing. Just another example of the ****ty plastic VW used on our cars. Water pump, window regulators, cooling connectors ...

Power steering fluid reservoirs... Lent on the inlet hose on a Beetle one last week

Re: the sleeve. Where you see the dipstick tube go into the block, inside there is a small metal sleeve. It should come out fairly easiliy.

Mine broke (partially) the other day too. Damned annoying. You can get a billet replacement part if you're so inclined (not OEM, from a third party). Considering it myself.
                  Nothing to see here...

                    Dip stick tube

Hi all, thanks for the responses.

Hopefully I'll just be able to change the yellow plastic top half of the tube. I believe it "should" just pull off and replace it.

Yea easy replacement. You need to remove a metal bracket attached to the throttle body.
You'll work it out when you see have a good look at the new part.

                        Hey Pete,

My dipstick tube broke last year also, it was actully broken when I bought the car but the dealer I bought it off is a whole different story!!

Anyway, mine is also the 1.6 Mk4 and it had no metal sleeve in the tube that the replacement part goes in. I'm not exactly sure what JustCruisin is referring to, but I didn't remove anything except the old tube.

Just be carefull when you remove the tube because it will be very brittle after the many heat cycles it has been through. Fitting the new one is as easy as pushing it on.

Sorry on the 1.8T there is metal bracket on the throttle body which holds the upper part of the tube.

Whew, you made me worried that I had left a bit floating around in the sump then!!

Good to hear that I didn't!

                              Dip Stick

                              Thanks everyone for the info.

I have made a couple of calls and I can get one from Imparts for $6.50 and one from VW for $9.50...either way...a cheap fix. It's just a shame that there seems to be lots of these little plastic bits (window regulators are a good example) that seem to fail....just annoying...
