  • Polyurethane exhaust hanger mod for Mk4's with 3 inch exhausts

    Hey Guys,

Since getting a 3 inch exhaust earlier in the year, the piping has occasionally hit the rear cross member when the car has passengers in the back seat. The exhaust would also bounce around a bit when leaving or entering ****ty driveways, and going over speed humps. The culprit for this is the stock exhaust hanger between the cross member and muffler is made of reasonably soft rubber and sags over time with heavier exhausts.

I found this remedy on vortex...
    http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4572859

Following that howto today, i made up the following exhaust hanger using a Cusco Polyurethane hanger bought off good old ebay ($25), and the bracket from my existing hanger. (I actually bought a fresh stock hanger just in case things didn't work out. )

The new hanger has pulled the exhaust up quite a bit. There's almost 2cms of clearance between the exhaust piping and cross member now, and the exhaust isn't moving/bouncing about at all... Overall i'm very happy.

I had this problem and utilised a suitable sized Heavy Duty hose clamp around the outside of the stock rubber hanger to help support it. You can then adjust the clamp just until any rattles are gone. It allows the system to move quite freely as needed but prevents the rubber hanger from over-extending under the weight of the bigger stainless system.

        Just another option.

I read about that on vortex too, but i was worried that the exhaust would still be able to bounce around a bit, and that the hose clamp might slip off the rubber...I guess it's been working ok for you though Snowy, so that's cool.
