  • Wheel stuck on!

So after my 2nd flat in 3 weeks i started swapping over my flat to thge space savere tonight for the drive to the tyre shop in the morning.

All going well, all nuts out, car jacked up (on super crap VW jack) and the wheel won't budge at all. I got all 4 wheels balanced and alligned 2 weeks ago at Bob Jane. When i look down the thread hole it looks like there is some copper residue that looks like oozed glue. Hand brake off etc etc.

I put full weight of car back on wheel with all nuts out and still won't budge.

Any idea what i could have missed? Or have Bob Jane gotten lazy and used glue to match up the holes when putting my wheels back on rendering it impossible to get the wheel off now?

Waiting for the NRMA now for nothing better than a potentially more sturdy jack.

First things first, loosen your bolts (or nuts on other cars) BEFORE you jack the car up and make it potentially unstable. All you need to do is crack the seal, but it's just safer to do it with the car on the ground.

VW Bolts shouldn't be put on using a rattle gun, rather a torque wrench set to the right setting. (That and they tend to tighten over time all by themselves). Failing all else, more leverage, which I'm sure NRMA will provide by way of an extension bar on the wheel brace.

Failling that, just use Golf Loon's method: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=10618

edit: My bad, I'm half asleep and thought you couldn't get the nuts out, just ignore me and go about your business ;P

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

All of the loosening was done before the jack even came out.

All the bolts are off now (i needed to jump on the standard wheel brace bar).

It's just that the wheel still seems to be joined to the hub. Like glued on or something.

Leave a stud on a couple of threads, and let the handbrake off, spin the wheel and thump the inner of the rim with a rubber mallet mate, never fails for me.

That's just Copper Anti seize. Stops the bolts from locking in the thread due to corrosion etc. Anyone worth their salt in the automotive industry uses it.

Back the bolts off, lift it up and get a block of wood and a sledge hammer or just a really big hammer. Hold the wood against the inside rim edge and give it a good whack with the hammer. Use a rubber mallet if you have one. If the wheel budges, keep rotating it and hitting it to shimmy it off the hub.

Crisis over...with the much stabler jack of the NRMA it just took a decent belt to get it off. Bit of corrosion sticking it on. If i hit it that hard on the VW jack it'd all be over.

                Thanks for your input team.

For the record, the correct tightening torque is 120NM (89 pounds).

I just gave my wheel a sturdy kick and pull at a few different points and it came off after a little while. This wasn't with the widow maker though, wouldn't trust that thing under any circumstances.
