I dare say the cable is a great tool regardless so I'd like to buy one.
Would this be suitable (see link below), it says it can do double k-line but cannot do CAN BUS. As far as I can see, our MkIV's do not run on CAN-BUS.

The mk4 doesn't need CANBUS, only MK5+
Are you sure you want a serial cable? Most notebooks don't have them anymore.
FleaBay VAGCOM cable
This is the one I have and it works fine.
I wasn't sure if the VAG-Tacho cable was different, although I'm pretty sure i did ask!I'm happy to throw some money toward one if you are willing to lend it to me...

I'm considering serial because I might be able to connect my Palm to it and use OBD Key or something similar.
With regards to the Vag-Tacho Cable, I'll do some more investigating first (like query my dash) before I consider buying one. Although, if I do, I'll take you up on your offer. The only thing with this cable is, its a one time use thing where I set my car up the way I like it and then never touch it again. Lets see if theres anyone in Melb that might already have it and willing to help us out.
At least with Vag-Com, I'll always use it for fault codes etc.

I got my Vag-Com Cable working with the car and I quized 17-Instruments and this is what I got;
From the looks of it, its a VDO type cluster. Anyone confirm this?
PS; Still trying to find someone in Melb with a Vag-Tacho Cable.......anyone?

A bit of an update;
The cable I purchased was a serial cable from ebay, not a USB version and guess what, I got it to work with Vag-Com, Vag-Tacho (or the older version of this called VWTool) and VDS-Pro.
It seems that all the trouble people have had getting one cable to work with the different software is all related back to the cable being a USB type.
Basically, when you buy the Vag-Com USB or Vag-Tacho USB cable, it requires a software driver to run it. Your essentially purchasing a Serial to USB adaptar built into the Vag-Com Cable. This makes the cable specific to the software your running it with.
Using a serial connection gets right around this problem.
Now for my next issue;
I can get into most modules using Vag-Com, VWTool and VDS Pro. I cannot however get into the 46 - Central Convenience module. VWTool was able to do it for a short period of time and then simply refused to after that.
I'm thinking of doing a capacitive discharge on the car to reset everything.
Any thoughts on how to reset everything?
From my research, you have to disconnect the positive and negative terminals from the battery and hold them together for 20 to 30 seconds and then put them back. I read elsewhere that you simply disconnect the battery from the car for 3 hours + and it will reset everything. Which ones true/false?
I also need help with the following;
17 - Instruments Soft Coding, what soft coding is required to:
- Enable to distance to empty feature?
- Enable the dash to light up when the key is turned
46 - Central Convenience Soft Coding, what soft coding is required to:
- FOB Auto Windows Up/Down holding the remote key Unlock/Lock
The below link is a great DIY Tut but its codes are for a European Model 2 Door GTi, not an Oz version.
Any help with the coding numbers would be great. BTW, if I get this working on my car, I'll happily do it for the people in Melb.
Cheers
