You serious dude? That sounds pretty ridiculous to me. Clutch change has always been about 1000 from what I've heard, have you asked them to get parts from places that sell them at realistic prices? That could be part of your problem..cos that does sound expensive to me.
Yep I've done the ring-a-round. The clutch itself is like 800 ish, a new dual mass flywheel is about a 1000. They come as a kit.
New starter is close to 800 as well.
But the quote for clutch + flywheel + starter fully installed is 2800.

Sounds like Clutch kit reqd mate. The high bite can be low linings on the plate. It would be a safe bet to replace the kit mind you as the pressure plate can also have an issue as previously mentioned and correct. Thats really it, now ive done a few clutches on the Pogs at pretty low Kss , once they got woken up by a software upgrade then the demands on everything that was before quite happy are somewhat changed. Changed a kit on a Pog that had around 30k and it was slipping like mad during logs post flash. Off topic slightly had a bloke at work just got an upgrade to his Falcon turbo. Now before hand i warned him of the things that can show up once you ask more of the machine and yeah 1 fuel pump, 1 coil pack and now a new Auto trans reqd.,
Dont be disheartened mate you will be happy when she is fixed.
Cheers

I don't think it should be that expensive man, check places like GAP, GSF, Tooleys, ASV, ring people like golf loon, seb, even jmac...most people on here that are mechanics can get good prices for things. I'd be surprised if it cost you that much through any of those I mentioned!

You could have gone with a solid flywheel and VR6 clutch kit for less but otherwise nothing to get a face on about.
Jimmy could have probably saved you some money overall.

I looked into the single mass flywheel. You have to wonder why the German engineers decided to go they way they did, vibration must have been a big enough issue for them. Maybe the box would not handle the vibs etc, would the harmonic balancer be put off etc etc.
My mechanic said he would not entertain the idea.
And most of all I just could not live with any more vibration in the cabin.
Maybe someone here would be a bit cheaper but I like the service I get from Lawrence at German Autos.
Oh and for the OP. The pickup point is about 1/4 to 1/3 from the floor. Is as light as a feather.
The clutch gets heavier as it wears and the pick up point moves closer to the top of the pedal. Before mine finally completely died last week it grabbed about 2cm from the top.

Without a doubt they are smoother but it's not that bad. I know you don't change them everyday but the DM is just so expensive. If you are a penny pinching Yorkshireman like me!
In the pursuit of refinement at 110Kw they are fine but if the car is chipped then there's a good chance it'll fall over much sooner than a SMF.
Shaneth's Polo lasted precisely 5 minutes with a chipped ECU. 4 of those were backing it out of the drive.
