it was one hell of a puddle- almost a road lake.

turns out it is the bottom of a rod- how it got out ive no idea, and i guess the fragments of alloy that came with it where chunks of sump.....

this is gonna cost a lot

That was what I was thinking - the bottom half of the conrod which goes around the bottom of the crankshaft. You'd certainly know if that were missing - you'd have a *serious* oil leak due to punching a hole in your bottom end - theoretically possible if the car ingested a lot of water (hydraulic lock in the cylinder)...

Are you sure it fell off your car, rather than getting fired up into the underneath off the road?

EDIT: Seems we posted at the same time. I'd have to guess your air intake sucked in a substantial amount of water, and when a piston rose during the compression stroke, you experienced hydraulic lock (liquid water doesn't compress) and that's blown a hole out the bottom of your block.

Time for a new bottom end...

                Ooh bugger...
This is going to one hell of a ride. Bad luck there mate. Definitely keep us in the loop on how this one goes.
Maybe time for that turbo kit since you're going to have the engine out yeah?
                Cheers,

Bad luck man, that's a sad sight indeed. Hope Joe can get it sorted out for you quickly and it's not too $$. Did you hit a pothole, or was it just general flooding on the road?

yep, looks like this is gonna hurt the ol' wallet....

nothing but a flooded stormdrain, covered the road with about 30cm deep of water.... no pot holes, nothing....

well, theres always a bright side, right? maybe its time to look into that supercharger while the engine out....

                          Ouch!!

Word of advice someone gave me when I started driving - If you're going to hit a large puddle lift off the gas / close the throttle!!

                          Too late now though :\

                            insurance should cover this.

Were you running a standard intake or a CAI

Yea i was thinking about this today and thought surely insurance would cover it. I know from my 4wding days if someone drowned their 4wd in a river crossing insurance would pay that out...essentially the same problem.
