To be honest - its your car r32_uberwagen, I reckon you can do whatever you want to do to it, whether you twirl the spanners yourself or pay someone else to do it. No-one can tell you what you can or can't do with your car as long as it's legal, ignore the haters and go the direction you want/can afford with it.
In the end, you're the one who's bum sits on the seat with the steering wheel in front of it, and its your call.
I completely agree with you there, as far as the "you can do anything you want to your car" comment. I never said that he cant do whatever he wants to his car. I am merely trying to bring reality to his unfortunate situation. I knew that i would get this sort of comment, so i expected it anyway.
"uberwagen", you have made a very nice choice by buying a 32. Awesome car and to be honest, would love one myself. Don't be tempted into doing performance mods until you have thought it completely through. VW have spent a lot of money and time to create the magnifficent car you've bought. Once you start tweaking it here and there, there will be reliability issues and there will always be a weakest link somewhere. That is unless you have an unlimited budget and can afford to re-engineer the whole engine and transmission. There are a ton of things to consider when tuning, i wouldn't even know where to start. This is not a case of "chuck a turbo on it and she'll be right". To sum up my point, my recommendation would be to just leave it stock until you can be fully committed emotionally and financially for a proper build-up with no short cuts as they will sting. Don't be tempted to throw together a whole bunch of mismatched "performance" parts as they are more than likely not gonna actually do anything anyway.
uberwagen, i hope you see the angle i'm coming from. take some good advice and don't be pushed into buying 'performance' parts until you have a proper clear plan of what you want to achieve first. There will be disasterous consequences otherwise.
While I agree with parts of what you are saying Beeza, there is always room for improvement and personalisation. I am sure Uber understands as do you, that a lot of the talk on here is dreams and aspirations and as such as you say it comes down to the the bottom-line being finances and reliability.
I am sure in the 5 years since the MKIV R32 was developed there have been some improvements to the car and not everything was built to the best it could be, case and point being the window regulators/brake light switch/coil packs etc etc.
I think the drive-train, brakes and suspension in an R32 will more than cope with a Charger upgrade, in any case all factors considered it may be easier for Ub3r to do a straight engine install but, I know I wouldn't if it was me. I would be doing everything possible to make it more drivable/fun/powerful/personal without going over the top i.e. my comment of two GT30's being a dream, it's not often you may get the chance to rebuild your engine or purchase a new block (Maybe HPA will do one ???
As you say any modifications should be considered and measured before going ahead as they do not always turn out how you expect.

Most of your points i do agree with. A HPA bottom end or a custom built up bottom end is useless unless you actually are serious about turbocharging or building a manic NA engine. Even then the bottom end is just the tip of the iceberg on the modification list.
Things like window regs/light switches/coil packs etc. are actually designed to fail to begin with. Although i don't agree with it but the spare parts department need to make money as well.
The bottom line is that i hope Ub3r gets it all sorted and will continue to enjoy his pride n joy.
My approach to personalising an r32 would be through suspension/styling/exhaust etc. I personally dont think that the R is a good contender for pure speed, but you cant beat it as a cruiser, and that exhaust note , its the only reason i'd buy one if i did.
Uber, one of the local R guys has a charger on his already. If you're keen, might be worth a chat with him. He's on here occassionaly...QuickR32 I think.
personalization is what its all about... despite the car.
even when it comes to little things, people need to chop and change just the little things to make that particular car theirs.
thats why you see frangipanis on the windows, stubby antennas... fluffy dice. all that horrible carp people insist on sticking on thier transport.
but your spot on when it comes to a major thing like a new engine, how often does it all go to ***** and you have the chance to add all those mods? you sure wouldnt do it blindly, i know i wouldnt, youd do your research and figure out how it all works rather than just pick the biggest hairdryer and pay just anyone to slap it on.
other than a little more go from start theres not much id change on the r... maybe a mkV boot release or lower it some, but really im really happy with the overall look, and like with this new engine mess wont change anything till it breaks down and needs improving.
