  • got the need for some power

    Hi all,
i have a 2001 bora v6 and had it for a little while and would like to put some more power in to her. i spoke to the local (south australian) authorties and they say putting a turbo or supercharger could be done but getting pass emmission test is nearly impossible (3 or 4 people have tried and failed). What else could i do?

Custom-Code have software for the 4-Motion. I have done several in the last year, you don't get the extra power you would from a flash on a turbo car though. It's more about driveability.

The Kraut has been pretty pleased with flash I did on his R32 at Christmas. The 4mo and R32 are pretty similar.

Have a look at www.custom-code.co.uk. You can PM goodfella in Sydney for his opinion.

I'd say so. It'd make the flash more effective.

Naturally, anything else you do before hand can be 'tuned' for with phase 2. The exact amount of the gain is so variable that you have to be prepared to find it isn't very much. Possibly less than 10 %.

The reason I didn't mention engine hardware, is it can get pretty expensive to go down that road.

For that reason I would be personally unlikely to use an NA car, as a basis for modding. I have done it with MK1s and it eats up money.

PM me if you want to talk about software sometime.

I got a CC flash about 2 weeks ago and I am pretty happy with it.

Fact: you dont get massive power gains

What I immediately noticed was a change in power delivery, especially in the low range, you prob have a similar "hole" below 2.5krpm, well it feels like the power comes on more smoothly and linear.

Also, following a drive down south last weekend I also found it had more drive in 6th when accelerating from 1*0kph to overtake on the freeway.

Ironically, prior to the flash, I had moved to BP ultimate from Vpower as I felt a difference in power, but Monday I was getting seriously low so I topped up with Vpower (most convenient servo at the time) and I felt the Vpower gave more punch than the previous tankfull of BP (??!!?)

As far as mods go, I have only fit a K&N panel filter at this stage.... possibly considering to do the rear muffler and pipe in more cold air directly to the std airbox.

I've been doing some research on things like headers and cams for the .:R in the last few weeks and basically for my car I can't justify doing it for the amount of coin you have to invest (at the moment anyway).
For example I've read 10-15hp at the wheels for the Milltek headers is to be expected. They're probably about 2k imported before installation and then the they are not even a bolt on fit apparently.
With cams you are looking at around 2.5-3k at the moment to import some and then the labour to install and get the timing right which is quite intensive (a guy does have a set for sale in Australia for the R32 at the moment for a grand). Then of course there is the software/tune for that has to go with these which once again is time intensive.

              HOWEVER...
All that is for the R32 which is already a pretty highly tuned N/A vehicle. The 2.8L VR6 on the other hand is not as highly tuned. Have a look around on Vortex and UK-MkIVs as I'm pretty sure I've read about some good results from cams and headers for this motor.

Gavin, the phase 2 custom-code tuning kind of puts you in a reasonable unique position where you can offer to individual people the ability to do these custom tunes where the other tuners aren't able to or willing to because of lack of demand/uniqueness etc. I imagine though that once again this kind of thing is time intensive and will cost a bit.

              Cheers,
              Trent

Btw there is a charged Bora running around and he was frequenting the forum a while back. He had a VF charger and claimed 300 KW but I am pretty sure he meant 300 HP unless of course he did it custom in which case it probably wouldn't have been VF.

So in essence you could ask him, how he got through emissions testing, but I don't see how it would be a problem, since you are leaving the CAT's in place...

this might sound abit dumb but if the 3.2 motor is highly tuned and the 2.8 is not, could i just change the motor to a 3.2? chip it and a set of headers? or isn't their much more power in the 3.2 for the work? i am sorry if this sounds abit stupid

                    R32 is 240hp to start, 4-mo is 204.

R32 motors don't grow on trees, would be cheaper to sell 4-mo and buy an R32.

If you can find an 3.2 motor sure but it's going to be pricey. Have a look for JVL32's thread where he was trying to find one. Also from my previous post, no there's not really that much power to be eeked out of the .:R without big dollars and/or forced induction.
Forced induction for the Bora is a good option.

By the way I think Seb (Bug_racer) is probably the best person for input on this topic as in Australia I think he's the man when it comes to N/A mods on the VR6 VWs.
                        Cheers,

theres about 3-4 r32's running around in Syd that Seb has fitted cams, extractors, port work, and other misc mods running 130-155 at all 4 wheels (with GIAC on most) as well.

i think he also may have a set of cams to suit a r32 golf that also fit in a v6 bora as well avail for sale from a customer (sexyr)
